This section introduces the various automated backup and recoveryutilities available to Oracle DBAs.
4.4.1. Oracle Recovery Manager
The Oracle Recovery Manager(RMAN) is provided by Oracle for use with an Oracle8 database. Usinga catalog located in a different database, RMAN automates theprocesses of performing hot and cold backups and moving archive filesto secondary storage. RMAN also supports the creation of incrementalhot backups. RMAN works with many of the commercial media managementsystems; contact Oracle Corporation for a complete list ofthird-party vendors that are supported.
4.4.2. Oracle Enterprise Backup Utility
The Oracle Enterprise Backup Utility (EBU)is provided by Oracle for use with an Oracle7 database. Using acatalog located in a different database, EBU automates the processesof performing hot and cold backups and moving archive files tosecondary storage. EBU works with many of the commercial mediamanagement systems; contact Oracle Corporation for a complete list ofthird-party vendors that are supported.
4.4.3. Third-Party Utilities
In addition to RMAN and EBU, there are a number of third-partyoperating system backup vendors that provide automated utilities forperforming Oracle database backup and recovery. Contact your backupvendor to see if they have an Oracle backup module.
Some third-party vendors support incremental hot backups. However, Oracle Corporation does not support incremental hot backups outside the RMAN environment.
