2 senior officials removed from posts

TWO senior officials have been removed from their posts after they were reported to be under investigation for “serious breach of Party discipline” a week ago, a report on Xinhua News Agency’s Web site said Thursday.

Song Yong, vice top legislator of Liaoning Province, and Li Tangtang, vice chairman of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, were still under investigation, it said.

Song’s wife and younger brother had been under investigation since the middle of the year, according to the Caijing magazine. Song was barred from traveling and was placed under “double designation” status during the National Day holidays.

“Double designation”(双规) means a Party member is requested to answer questions at a designated place and for a designated duration, according to Gan Yisheng, secretary general of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the CPC.

Li, 55, was reprimanded in 2007 for illegally soliciting recommendations to help his promotion in Shaanxi Province. He was sent to his present position in 2008.

Xinhua said frequent investigations by the Party’s disciplinary watchdog was a sign of China’s determination to root out corrupt officials.

Since August, several former provincial and ministerial officials have been expelled from the Party and found guilty of corruption, including Huang Songyou, former vice president of the Supreme People’s Court, and former top political adviser of Guangdong Province, Chen Shaoji.
