Moscow police have clashed with demonstrators who gathered in the city center to protest the shooting of a soccer fan. At least 3 people were seriously injured and 65 detained.

Thousands of fans of the Russian football club Spartak Moscow gathered in the capital Saturday, throwing burning items and trying to break through police lines.

The crowd was distraught over the death of Yegor Sviridov, a member of the team's fan club. He was shot with rubber bullets, Monday, in a fight at a bus stop.

A suspect arrested in the killing is a native of the Caucasus region Kabardino-Balkaria, raising ethnic tensions.

That fanned the persistent resentment many Slavic Russians have for Caucasus ethnic groups.

Arthur Glokhovsky said, "What is happening here is a sign of the people's anger, of the people's fear, the fear that criminal acts could continue. We think that we should take this into account, that we should draw the public's attention, this should not be left without punishment. Criminals should be found. It's not important if they are from Caucasus or not, the criminals should be found and punished."

A Moscow court on Saturday also authorized the arrest of two other suspects, both from the Caucasus region of Dagestan.

Moscow's police chief met demonstration leaders, and promised Sviridov's death would be thoroughly investigated.

Most of the crowd dispersed about an hour after the violence began.

Earlier on Saturday, several thousand mourners gathered at the bus stop in northern Moscow, laying flowers and pictures at the spot where Sviridov was killed.

The incident is set to darken Moscow's image less than two weeks after the country won the right to host the 2018 soccer world cup.
