Southgate offers masterclass in stifling the elite

索斯盖特应该把这场胜利录制成DVD，然后米堡球员轮着发一圈，让他们好好回味这甜蜜的滋味。9天前，阿斯顿维拉把阿森纳搞得鸡犬不宁，上星期三，又是纽卡斯尔联把阿森纳逼平。这两场比赛都很精彩，但是比不上今天这场。本场比赛里，索斯盖特合理运用战术成功地遏制了阿森纳的一班技术型球员。
阿森纳是一支技术出色的球队，但是昨天他们被米堡超强的侵略性和纪律性所震慑，米堡在领先后根本就没有后撤的意思，他们还是把防线顶了上去。阿里亚迭雷和通恰伊把阿森纳的中路死死压住，阿森纳的中路球员连出球都很困难。同时，唐宁和奥尼尔则在两翼遏制了萨尼亚和克里希的活动。
米堡中场也很好地压缩了空间。米堡在赛前就做好了最坏打算——枪手会处于最佳状态，他们的地面进攻会流畅无比，当然这种情况没有出现。索斯盖特强调了中场和前后场的衔接，而枪手这边被冲得七零八落。
中场罗申巴克、博阿腾与席尔瓦、迪亚拉缠斗了整场比赛，他们都想把对方的节奏破坏掉；在后防上一旦有高空球吊阿德巴约的头顶，维特和伍德盖特都会及时出现把球阻断。昨天的米堡几乎一丢球就会立刻抢回来，两翼的唐宁和奥尼尔功不可没，他们不停地上下穿象针一样穿透了阿森纳的战线。
由于米德尔斯堡掐断了他们的供给线，阿森纳不能把球送到阿德巴约脚下，既然阿森纳的皮球走不了地面，那米德尔斯堡也没什么可怕的了。这场比赛是教科书一般的，明白无误地告诉了我们该如何紧逼对手，如何争夺空间，如何轮转换位，最重要的是，不要在领先时盲目退守。对索斯盖特和他的教练组来说这场胜利带来了宝贵的喘息机会。英格兰本土教练的处境还真是可怜。

Gareth Southgate should package this successful recipe and send the DVD to every Middlesbrough player as a present to savour. They had seen Aston Villa harass Arsenal in the second half nine days ago and Newcastle battle the north London side last Wednesday. This performance eclipsed both. For a clear understanding of how to combat technically superior players this was a masterclass.
Arsenal's team of talented brilliance were hustled with controlled aggression and clear instruction. Never dropping deep while holding the lead, Boro played on the front foot, each man confronting his immediate opponent early. Defending begins from the front. Jérémie Aliadière and Tuncay Sanli pressed Arsenal's centre-backs from the outset and closed their angles of pass, with Stewart Downing and Gary O'Neil doing likewise on the flanks against Bacary Sagna and Gaël Clichy.
The midfield pressed and compressed space brilliantly. Middlesbrough had suspected that Arsenal would attempt to play to feet early and accurately in their best tradition and Southgate had insisted that the Middlesbrough middle line must always be in touch with their front and back players. As a consequence Arsenal could find no fluency.
Fabio Rochemback and George Boateng battled with Gilberto Silva and Lassana Diarra with incessant tackling to stifle any rhythm and, when the ball was ferried to Emmanuel Adebayor on the floor, David Wheater and Jonathan Woodgate snapped quickly. As balls ran loose, eager Boro bodies regained possession quickly, with Downing and O'Neil tucking in to make a solid bank for Arsenal to pierce.
Because Boro squeezed the supply, Arsenal could not get passes into Adebayor's feet and when Middlesbrough recovered the ball they were never in awe of Arsène Wenger's side. This was a textbook illustration of closing down opposition and space, working to cover for one another and, most importantly, not sitting deep when protecting a lead. For Southgate and his coaching staff the win provided welcome and deserved relief. No English coaches indeed!
