The three 'firsts' of Yushu rescue worker Shi Huajie

Shi Huajie is the director of the Yushu-based division of the Armed Police Corps of Qinghai province, and he and his soldiers was the first military unit to arrive in Yushu. At the same time, Shi himself was the first rescue worker to pull an earthquake victim out from a collapsed building and he has also established the first "green channel for disaster relief" in Yushu.
He organized the first disaster relief military unit
Shi organized the first disaster relief military unit consisting of rescue teams, medical service teams and reinforcements. He divided all of his 650 men into 40 rescue teams of around 10 to 15 soldiers. Led by regiment and battalion-level officers, the military unit immediately rushed to the disaster-stricken Yushu Prefecture.
Eight minutes after the earthquake, Shi and his men arrived at the worst-hit areas.
At 9:30 a.m. on April 14, Shi reported the disaster situation to the CPC Central Committee and all the Chinese people during an interview with CCTV.
Shi was the first rescue worker to pull a victim out from a collapsed building
Led by Shi, a rescue team arrived at the Vocational High School of Yushu Prefecture to help students. Shi saved a student from a collapsed building and later found out that he was the first person to save a life during the rescue and relief operations.
Under the leadership of Shi, the Yushu-based division of the Armed Police Corps of Qinghai province was the first military unit to reach the earthquake-hit area. In addition, the division bears the heaviest work burden and has saved the most victims.
Shi opened the first "green channel for disaster relief"
Only one hour after the earthquake, a "green channel for disaster relief" was established in the headquarters.
Shi participates in rescue efforts during the daytime and sets up tents for survivors at night. He has set up more than 50 tents for 700 survivors in two days. Meanwhile, he has organized three medical service teams and set up two meal stations to feed 5,000 survivors.
Shi has won a second-class merit citation and six third-class merit citations since his entry into the army 27 years ago. He was chosen as an excellent CPC member or an excellent military officer five times. The division was endorsed as an advanced military unit for five consecutive years after Shi was appointed the director of the division. In July 2009, the division was endorsed as an outstanding military unit by the headquarters of the Armed Police Troops of China.
