The Best and Worst CG of Cameron's Avatar

Cameron's Avatar revolutionized cinema, but the CG still has its ups and downs.

There's no doubt about it: James Cameron's Avatar has pushed the limits of cinematic computer graphics to a new level of realism.  Whoever thought a ten-foot-tall alien would be able to pull at your heartstrings?

But not all CG is created equal.  For every breathtaking landscape or meticulously textured patch of skin, there's something that stands out and makes us wonder, "Which intern's project was that?"

Here's our list of  Avatar's most dazzling of effects shots...and some that didn't quite live up to the hype.

BRILLIANT:

The Hallelujah Mountains

VITALS

  • Products: Avatar
  • Franchises: Avatar
  • Genres: Action Adventure
  • Studio: 20th Century Fox
  • MPAA Rating: PG-13
  • Producer: Jon Landau
  • Director: James Cameron
  • Writer: James Cameron
  • Cast Members: Michelle Rodriguez, Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang,Zoe Saldana

If there were one aspect of Pandora that sold the alien moon as a real place, it would be the floating hills of the Hallelujah Mountains.  With white waterfalls that put Naboo to shame, these hovering chunks of rock andunobtainium remind us that we're not in Kansas anymore.

Grace Augustine as her Avatar

Cameron made a smart choice when he cast Sigourney Weaver as Dr. Grace Augustine, the RDA's resident scientist.  Not only is she a phenomenal actress, her pronounced facial features make her a prime candidate for the motion capture conversion in to a Na'vi Avatar.  The eyes, the nose, the mouth - it's all Sigourney...but it's not.

Jake's Crippled Legs

The world of Avatar can be a flashy place, but the greatest use of CG?  The subtle enhancing of Sam Worthington's legs to look weathered and thin, emphasizing his desperate need for a new pair of...REAL legs.  Yeah, maybe Sam Worthington could have gone all method and lost some weight, but not everyone can be Christian Bale (read: crazy).

NOT SO GREAT:

 AMP Suits

James Cameron walked dangerous territory including the RDA AMP suits that so closely resemble the powerloader from Aliens.  The CG is passable, but haven't we already seen the real life equivalent?  Not to mention there seems to be no limit to this mechanized suit's abilities: Col. Quaritch runs, jump, rips off his helmet, and plunges at a Thanator with...the suit's concealed knife?  Oy.  Word to the wise: special effects look a tad silly when you throw reality to the wind.

The Ichran/Banshee

The dire horses, thanators, and hammerhead titanotheres all burst through the jungles of Pandora with the utmost realism, so how did the mighty Ichrans end up only a few notches away from Dragonheart?  If there's anything comparable to a "video game" in Avatar, it's the occasional moment where a banshee is taking a break from soaring through the sky or chomping soldiers out of helicopters, long enough for us to see the damn thing.  Years flying through the flux vortex will do that to you.

Jake Sully as his Avatar

Maybe it had something to do with Jake Sully waking up in his Avatar and immediately leaping around the room, but from the looks of it, his Na'vi counterpart didn't get enough time in the incubator.  While Sam Worthington's performance still breaks through his digital make-up, we didn't see the same kind of definition that we did from his co-stars.  C'mon Sam, suck in those cheekbones!
