The market scale of handset-use Wi-Fi chips will grow to the 100-million unit level in 2007, up from 10-20 million units in 2006, according to Michael Lu, president of Airoha Technology, a fabless semiconductor company that designs, develops and markets RF and mixed-signal IC solutions, as quoted by the Chinese-language Commercial Times.
The penetration of Wi-Fi chips in mobile phones will grow from only 2% in 2006 to 6-10% in 2007, Lu was quoted as saying.
The overall Wi-Fi chip market will double to 200 million units in 2006 and continue to grow strongly in 2007 amid demand for smart phones, which will account for 10% of the overall handset market this year, Lu was quoted by the paper as estimating.
