A series of recent reports reveal that several countries show their interest in Vietnam's Cam Ranh Bay.

According to reports from RT, Russia's former Chief of Navy General Staff, Admiral Viktor Kravchenko said Russian surface vessels and submarines require maintenance, replenishing their stocks and crews need rest when fulfilling a wide range of tasks in the ocean. He also explained if Russia still considers itself a maritime power, restoring bases like the Cam Rahn one is inevitable. However, reports from Itar-Tass quoted a Russian presidential administration official as saying Russia does not raise the issue to fully restore the naval base in Cam Ranh, Vietnam.

According to Hindu, US Defence Secretary Robert Gates begins an official visit to Vietnam amid warming military relations between the two countries. Washington has been seeking access to Cam Ranh for years to monitor Chinese naval activity, but Vietnam has stalled out of fear of antagonising China. India has also displayed interest in the Cam Ranh naval base.

Meanwhile, analysts say Vietnam doesn't only see the Cam Ranh Bay as a political lever, but also an economic lever.

Vietnam doesn't like to build the Cam Ranh Bay to be a pure military base. First of all, there is no realistic need for it. Besides, Vietnam doesn't own economic strength for such a build-up. Nowadays, Vietnam has owned the foundation for its economic development and it hopes build some international ports like Hong Kong and Singapore, which can contribute to economic benefits and state image.

Analysts say such an idea may be more practical for Vietnam. The Cam Ranh Bay and its surrounding sea ports may become future economic hot zones. The special geography and sound port condition, which provided foreign troops with military service before, could also help Vietnam's economic development in the future. Vietnamese leaders have many times revealed the information.

Say, will Cam Ranh Bay turn into an economic hot zone in the future?
