Economic ministers from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Russia held consultations here on Tuesday, putting forward measures to promote economic cooperation between ASEAN and Russia.

The consultations, the first of its kind, were co-chaired by Vietnamese Minister of Industry and Trade Vu Huy Hoang and Russian Minister of Economic Development Elvira Nabiullina.

At the meeting, the ministers said they expected the first consultations of ASEAN and Russia' economic ministers would create momentum to expand the economic and trade relations between ASEAN and Russia.

The ministers held that economic cooperation would bring best benefits to both sides. They agreed that consultations among senior economic officials of ASEAN and Russia would play an important role in coordinating economic cooperation programs and activities between the two sides.

The ministers assigned their senior officials to prepare for the setting up an experts' group to build up a roadmap for comprehensive economic cooperation. Representatives from companies are also encouraged to participate in the group.

The ministers exchanged views on the current regional and global economic situation as well. The second consultations between ASEAN and Russia are expected to be held in 2011.
