David Cameron, the UK prime minister, is hoping that Beijing will make him look good during his visit this week by announcing that it has approved Diageo’s bid to take control of one of China’s best known spirits brands.
英国首相戴维•卡梅伦(David Cameron)希望，在他本周访华期间，中国政府会给他一个面子，宣布批准帝亚吉欧(Diageo)竞购中国最知名白酒品牌之一的控制权。
Diageo wants to buy a controlling stake in Shui Jing Fang, one the Middle Kingdom’s most famous brands of that most Chinese of drinks, baijiu, or literally white alcohol. Beijing is trying to figure out whether it can bear to see something so Chinese, become so British.
帝亚吉欧希望收购水井坊的控股权。白酒是一种极具中国特色的酒品，而水井坊是中国最著名的白酒品牌之一。中国政府正在考虑，自己是否能够容忍如此具有中国特色的商品变成十足的英国货。
But at the same time that Diageo is trying to argue that nationality should not matter to baijiu, it is asserting a territorial claim to that most Scottish of drinks, Scotch whisky.

Vince Cable, who is part of the government team visiting Beijing, told the Daily Telegraph that he will sign an agreement to make sure that the only Scotch whisky sold in China comes from Scotland.

Of course law is law, and fact is an entirely different matter. Chinese drinks fakers are just as good as other pirates at figuring out how to sell cheap knockoffs.

Beijing competition officials may have the last word on whether or not Diageo can buy Shui Jing Fang — but not on whether knockoff scotch disappears anytime soon from Chinese liquor store shelves.
北京的反垄断官员或许在帝亚吉欧能否收购水井坊一事上拥有最后的决定权；但说到冒牌苏格兰威士忌能否很快就从中国卖酒商店的货架上消失，他们可能就没有最终决定权了。
