UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Monday welcomed the holding of the presidential election in Cote d'Ivoire on Sunday, UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said in a statement.

Ban lauded the Ivorian people for exercising their right to vote in a peaceful manner, nothing that "this election is an important milestone in the efforts to restore lasting peace in the country."

The secretary-general noted the efforts of the Ivorian Independent Electoral Commission and both national and international partners that contributed to the peaceful conduct of the election.

Ban "calls on all parties and candidates to play their part in maintaining a calm environment and urges them to accept the proclaimed and certified results, filing any complaints through the legally-established mechanisms," said Nesirky.

Cote d'Ivoire plunged into war following an attempted coup in 2002 by the ex-rebel New Forces, who still hold power in the northern part of the country while the government controls the south.

The West African nation has struggled to hold the presidential election since a 2007 peace deal broke years of deadlock between rebel forces and the government.

"The United Nations remains deeply committed to support the Ivorian peace process," said the UN spokesman.
