UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East peace process Robert Serry on Tuesday condemned the killing of four Israeli travellers in an attack by the Islamic Hamas movement near the West Bank city of Hebron late this afternoon.
"We condemn this murderous act and call for those responsible to be brought to justice," Serry said in a statement.
The UN envoy urged all parties "not to allow the enemies of peace to affect the peace negotiations to be launched" on Thursday, when Israel and the Palestinians are expected to launched their direct peace talks in Washington.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Jordan's King Abdullah and Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak are expected to meet at the White House with U.S. President Obama to negotiate the possibilities of a Palestinian state.
The talks will mark the first direct negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians in 20 months.
Expressing his shock at the attack, Serry urged all parties to "progress with determination and courage on behalf of both peoples, towards a final settlement."
