Mary was cooking at this time yesterday.

例1中的three years ago、in 1985、last night 所指的过去时间均较为笼统；而例2中的at this timeyesterday、 when I came in、 when the thief broke into the house所指的过去时间均较为具体。
2、过去一般时表示的是某个动作是否发生过，而不太关注这个动作持续的时间；过去进行时却侧重于某个动作持续的时间长短。因而，过去进行时往往含有“整个晚上”、“一个上午”等含义。请比较下列例子：
