People shouldn’t feel intimated by Columbia; they accept Chinese students each year. Good news is they just started a new two-year M.A. program, while keeping the original one-year (or nine-month) M.S. program. The good thing about the two-year program is that it provides several tracks: science, economics/business, cultural, and political reporting. So it’s nice for somebody who wants concentration.

The problem for Chinese students is always money. There are some free rides each year, like the Fulbright scholarship, but I am aware of only one Chinese student who has got the scholarship. The school also gives out some money each year - I got 15 grands when I went there. But being a private school, Columbia gets most its money from alumni donation, so the sources aren’t plenty.

Students should also try joining professional groups, like Committee to Protect Journalists, and Asian American Journalists Association, whenever they can. Those names carry weight in the circle, and may help with their application.
