A proposed high-level delegation headed by Filipino Vice President Jejomar Binay and Foreign Secretary Alberto Romulo to Beijing and Hong Kong in the wake of the bloody bus siege in the Philippine capital of Manila did not leave as planned on Aug. 26 and was rescheduled.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry made it clear on Aug. 26 that the top priority for the Philippine government is to get a clear investigation of the incident as soon as possible. There is conjecture by media in Hong Kong that the delegation will not be accepted by China until the Philippines came up with a satisfying investigation.

The delegation planned to head to Beijing on Aug. 26 and to Hong Kong a day later, but the spokesperson of the Office of the Chief Executive of Hong Kong Special Administration Region (HKSAR) confirmed on Aug. 26 that no notice had been received about the visit by the high-level Philippine delegation.

Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda, quoting the Department of Foreign Affairs, told reporters that the Philippine government is "waiting for the confirmation of the Chinese side on the arrangement that will ensure that the mission of the planned visit is achieved."

He added that an appropriate announcement will be made about when the visit will take place.

In a regular press conference in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Jiang Yu said the Chinese side and the Filipinos are keeping in close touch over the hijacking incident, and China has repeatedly stressed its stance to the Philippine side.

The hostage crisis in Manila, involving a 21-member Hong Kong tour group, ended on Monday night with eight hostages killed and several others injured. The dismissed Filipino police officer who hijacked the tour bus was also killed during the police assault.
