Honda said Tuesday that production at another plant in southern China was paralyzed after many workers went on strike, just three days after the Japanese carmaker reached a pay deal with workers at a parts factory in the same city.

Honda's Beijing-based spokesman, Zhu Linjie, confirmed to the Global Times that workers went on strike Monday morning at Foshan Fengfu Autoparts in Foshan, Guangdong Province, a joint venture between Yutaka Giken, which is 70 percent owned by Honda, and Moonstone Holdings, a Taiwanese company.

"We are assessing whether the assembly production of Honda will be affected," Zhu told the Global Times Tuesday, declining to disclose why the workers walked off the job.

According to the Economic Observer website, workers gathered on the lawn of the factory complex at 7 am Monday, refusing to work unless they got a pay raise. The site said the average factory worker was paid 1,300 yuan ($190) a month.

The Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post said that by Monday evening about 250 workers joined the strike spearheaded by some 20 employees. The factory employs a total of 600 workers. The paper said the workers were disgruntled over losing pay from days lost in an earlier strike at Honda's factories.

Details of any demands made by the workers were unavailable, and calls to the factory went unanswered.

The factory supplies exhaust and silencer systems for Guangqi Honda, a joint car assembly venture between Honda and Guangzhou Automobile.

Yang Guang, a PR officer with Guangqi Honda, told the Global Times Tuesday that the strike has so far not affected the plant's production, but it will have an impact if it is not solved soon.

An industry insider revealed that the inventory at Honda's final assembly factories can only ensure production for one and a half days.

The strike came just days after Honda settled a two-week strike at its engine factory in Foshan that paralyzed the production of its four factories in China.

Honda struck a deal Friday with 1,900 workers who went on strike, offering them a 24 percent pay raise to about 1,900 yuan a month, China Business newspaper reported.

A worker at Honda's Foshan facility, where production resumed after the strike, said that although workers were not completely satisfied with the raise, they decided to accept that amount.

"With this extra 500 yuan each month, I'm able to improve my living conditions a little and send more back home to support my family," he said, requesting anonymity.

Dong Yang, secretary general of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, argued that the booming car industry in China may be greatly affected by the recent wave of strikes in factories owned by foreign carmakers, and such a trend could spread to China's domestic carmakers if no immediate measures are taken to resolve the disputes.

"If carmakers want their operations to be sustainable, they need to pay attention to workers' welfare instead of merely focusing on making profits," he said.

Meanwhile, Merry Electronics Shenzhen announced Tuesday that it had resolved a strike that began Sunday, launched by workers who were unhappy with their pay and shift arrangements.

The factory, which has more than 10,000 workers and manufactures mobile phone components, settled the strike by agreeing to raise the workers' salary from 900 to 1,050 yuan a month.
