Nicaragua, Russia sign MOU on natural disasters

MANAGUA, Nov. 10 (Xinhua) -- The Nicaraguan Army and Russian Emergency Situations Ministry signed on Tuesday a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to supply Nicaragua with equipment to fight natural disasters.

The MOU, on equipment worth 6.586 million U.S. dollars, was signed here by the chief of Nicaragua's National Army Omar Halleslevens and Russian Emergency Situations Minister Sergei Shoigu.

After the signing ceremony, Halleselvens said this MOU would allow Nicaragua to acquire in a short time Russian machinery, equipment and specialized techniques to strengthen its emergency system against natural disasters.

"At this time of limitations in the world economy, we greatly value the meaning of collaboration" for the period 2009-2010, Halleslevens said.

Halleslevens added that the Nicaraguan Army would give priority to preserving life and properties of citizens during natural disasters.

For his part, Shoigu said this MOU was part of the cooperation program between the two countries to tackle emergencies and other situations.

"We know how important it is for Nicaragua to act against problems of emergencies of different kinds, like earthquake, flood, volcano, fire and forest fire, and hurricane," Shoigu said.
