Mitac International will probably be unable to sustain its goal to ship eight million GPS PNDs (including own-brand and ODM/OEM models) in 2008 due to a severe slump in the global automobile market, according to the company.

However, the company has yet to provide a revised shipment target for this year.

While acknowledging the shrinking auto markets in the US and Europe, Mitac said it will continue to promote sales of its GPS PNDs in emerging markets, especially in China, as auto sales in those market still remain relatively strong.

To sustain its future growth, Mitac is stepping into the netbook OEM market, said the company, noting that some netbook models will be powered by Intel's Atom CPUs featuring a 8.9-inch display.

In other news, the company said revenues dropped 35.5% on year to NT$4.68 billion (US$140 million) in November. For the first 11 months of this year, revenues totaled NT$57.33 billion, a decline of 25.1% from a year earlier.
