Global arms market will enter the era of "made in China"?

Jane's Defense Weekly September 15 releases a detailed report on the overall development of China's national defense industry. It says the global defense market is coming to the era of "made in China" following the consumption market.

According to the report, China's national defense industry has gained prominent development in aerospace and shipbuilding. China develops a number of military aeronautic platforms, including J-10, FC-1/JF-17 Xiaolong, J-11B, Kongjing-2000 early warning aircraft and a series of UAVs, of which performance is second only to US and Russia's like products. It's estimated that the total number of J-10 fighters is likely to exceed 300, which depends on the development of China's fifth generation fighter J-XX.

The report says China's national defense industry is striving to promote its products in the global market and has gained tremendous achievements. Aviation Industry Cooperation of China announced in 2009 it broke the record of defense export in the same year and took new export markets as the key momentum for further development.

Analysis from the report points out the sound popularity of military products labeled "made in China" in the global arms market results from the fact that China cannot only provide developing countries with military equipment, but also offer technical support for the construction of infrastructure, or even provide credit support. For example, Aviation Industry Corporation of China, China North Industries Group Corporation and China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation all have their offices in Islamabad to support Pakistan's procurement of Chinese weaponry – JF-17 fighters, Al-Khalid main battle tanks and F-22P frigates. Meanwhile, China also helps Pakistan modernize its national defense.

The report thinks the biggest challenge that China's national industry faces is military technology which is needed for the development after 2020. Though China sticks to indigenous development of many advanced technologies, it's nearly impossible for China to surpass the west developed countries in the high-technology development, or it's very difficult for China to catch up.
