Most Jordanians believe the newly appointed government of Prime Minister Samir Rifai will be capable of shouldering the responsibility and addressing challenges at hand, according to a poll issued Tuesday.

The poll, released by the Center for Strategic Studies at the state-run University of Jordan, showed that 72 percent of Jordanians believe the government will succeed in running foreign policy, while 63 percent of Jordanians said they believe the government will be successful in addressing economic policies of Jordan.

The survey, which polled about 1,186 respondents, indicated that 49 percent of Jordanians believe that the new government will not succeed in improving living standards of Jordanians and will not be successful in alleviating poverty and unemployment.

According to the poll, unemployment topped the priorities of the public with 24 percent, followed by poverty and high cost of living with 18 per cent, the overall economic situation with 11 percent, financial and administrative corruption with 6 percent and water with 5 percent.

Last week, Rifai announced a cabinet reshuffle. The 31-member Cabinet includes 11 newcomers. Of the total number of cabinet members, three are women.

The reshuffle was the second since Rifai took power in December last year after King Abdullah II of Jordan dissolved parliament midway through its term.
