Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao attended the ninth prime ministers' meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) in the Tajik capital city of Dushanbe on Thursday, which aimed to implement a consensus reached at the Tashkent SCO summit in June to boost security, economic and humanitarian cooperation among member states.

During the one-day meeting, several bilateral talks and signing ceremonies were held, and government heads of SCO members comprehensively summarized the development of cooperation over the past year and mapped out plans for future progress.

As expected, the Thursday gathering yielded extensive and pragmatic results in boosting post-crisis regional economic cooperation, facilitating investment, defining major tasks of member states on humanitarian cooperation such as emergencies, culture and health, and enhancing the organization's institutional construction.

One major issue of Thursday's meeting was regional economic cooperation. With one fifth of the global land area and a quarter of the world's population, the SCO member states spanning Eurasia share huge potential for economic cooperation.

The economic and trade volumes of SCO member nations currently amount to one ninth and one 10th, respectively. of the world totals. Following the global financial crisis, economic ties between SCO countries became increasingly closer as they dedicated themselves to promoting economic stability in the region.

From January to October this year, trade volume between China and other SCO members surged 37.4 percent to hit 67.9 billion U.S. dollars, while at the same time, investment, financial and commercial collaboration have also been broadened and deepened.

After the Dushanbe meeting, all SCO members will undoubtedly continue to actively cooperate with each other for the sake of regional sustainable economic growth as well as a steady recovery of the global economy.

Founded in 2001, the SCO consists of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Mongolia, India, Pakistan and Iran are observers.

Since its establishment, the SCO has committed itself to the Shanghai Spirit, which advocates mutual trust, mutual benefit, equality and coordination, respects cultural diversity and seeks common development with an aim to boost bilateral and multilateral cooperation within the bloc.

Facing the security threats of the "three evil forces" of terrorism, separatism and extremism, along with drug trafficking, weapon smuggling and cross-border crime, the SCO will continue to serve as a firm force in safeguarding regional and global peace and stability.

Against a murky future for the global economy and the lingering aftermath of global financial crisis, only through consolidated efforts and self-improvement can SCO member states guard their own interests and inject new momentum into the organization's advancement and the region's stability and prosperity.
