China's leading and most influential newspaper, People's Daily, calls for making nationwide utmost efforts to carry on the great "earthquake relief spirit" in a front-page editorial on Friday. The detailed abstracts of the PD editorial read as follows:

A nation, which emerges from disasters to stand up proudly, is inevitably the one that will possess the great spirit; a nation, which knows how to carry on this great spirit, will surely stand rock-firm in a "family of nations".

Wenchuan and Yushu counties in western Sichuan and Qinghai provinces witness massive quakes the Chinese nation suffered in history, and also cast the great "quake relief spirit". Facing the extreme rare tremor in Yushu, the Communist Party of China (CPC), the whole army and the people of all ethnicities, by relying on their united will and working together courageously, have striven for the great victory and created a miracle in the history of disaster relief in the high-cold plateau region.

On Thursday, Chinese central authority called a meeting in Xining, capital of Qinghai province in northwest China, to sum up the quake relief work and commend outstanding quake relief units or individual heroes. This is a great occasion to vigorously promote the great "quake relief spirit", which encourages both cadres and people to win an all-round victory in their quake relief work and ensuing reconstruction.

By vigorously spurring the great "quake relief spirit", the national spirit of working together with "one heart and one mind" will translate into the powerful strength to advance in unity. In the face of tragic Yushu quake, the entire Chinese nation came "together with" to the aid of the people of Yushu; "when one place is in difficulty, the sides in all directions render support"; the people of 56 ethnicities across China are interlinked by their blood vessels and have formed an indestructible "community of faith" by sharing weal and woe. This has shown the rallying and centripetal strength of CPC, the superiority of the socialist system, the national strength and temperament of pulling together in times of trouble. If people work in unity in the course of the great practice of reform, opening-up and socialist modernization, our cause will prosper and China will be more prosperous and thriving.

By vigorously carrying on the great "quake relief spirit", the national moral character will transform into the firm resolve for pioneering and exploration. In the case of the sudden Yushu tremor, Party committees and governments at various levels made urgent mobilization of local people, CPC members played a pace-setting, exemplary role, locals of various ethnicities did their best to "rescue themselves" and helped one another in relief operation. And men and officers of the people's army charged ahead, "battled" bravely and sent people in the quake area the "hope to survive".

Of late, an extremely catastrophic mudslide hit Zhouqu county in Gansu province. Thanks to the wise, strong leadership of the CPC Central Committee and the State Council, soldiers and civilians have worked in unity and waged an arduous struggle to tackle the natural scourge and won great victory. Some people are fully convinced that great victory won in the Yushu quake relief work will inspire officials and people of various ethnicities nationwide to stand tests and cope with all disasters the human beings have encountered.
