Welcome to the University of Manitoba's Learning Technologies Centre's pilot installation of wiki software. Wikis are editable web pages that can be used to collaboratively develop ideas, plan and write documents. Previous versions of wiki pages are saved and can be reviewed and/or restored.
This wiki can be used by University faculty, staff and students for academic or professional purposes. If you are interested in using Wikis in your course please contactltc@umanitoba.ca
The LTC wiki requires logins for editing. The login button is found in the upper right hand corner of the page. If you have a UMnetID, login with your username and password, selecting 'umanitoba.ca' as 'Your domain'. If you don't have a UMnetID, you can create an account and then login, selecting 'local' as 'Your domain'. To save an edited page you will also have to answer a simple arithmetic question.
The LTC offers three workshop series:

[edit] What is a wiki?
A wiki is a web page/site that anyone can edit. The most popular isWikipedia.

To edit pages, just click on the edit tab at the top of the page. If a page doesn't have an Edit tab, it's been locked by the administrator. The easiest way to add a page is to alter the URL. In the URL, after wiki/ type in your newpage name. For example, if you want to create a page about widgets, the URL would readhttp://ltc.umanitoba.ca/wiki/Widgets. Please make sure that an article doesn't already exist for your subject before creating a new page. If you have an existing html page that you'd like to copy content from, you can use thehtml2wiki converter. Just copy in the html and click Convert. Note: if you copy and paste html, you will most likely need to specify a "Base URL for relative links". take the URL of the page you're copying from and remove the last slash ('/') and everything after it. For example, if you were copying html fromhttp://ltc.umanitoba.ca/wiki/index.php?title=Main_Page, you would use a Base URL of 'http://ltc.umanitoba.ca/wiki'.
[edit] What is a category, and how can I make a new one?
Most pages in the wiki have categories, that is a descriptor (or series of descriptors) that tells you what's on the page, and allows you to find related pages. Categories are added to pages by adding a category tag Category:Category name surrounded by double braces. For example, if you write an article about WAV files, you might add the tags 'file formats' and 'audio' to the page, so that others looking for articles about file formats can easily find it (these tags have been added to this page). Feel free to create your own categories, but please check the categories page first to see if any there are appropriate.
