North Korean Players gone missing.

Hello TL.
As I was tuning in to see the second half of the Argentina vs S.Korea game, I heard the newscaster for TVR1 (Romania's national TV station) talking about four north korean players gone missing from the world cup.
It is believed that they have fled in order to avoid going back to North Korea.
However, I can't seem to find an internet source for this. It could be because it's recent, but I sincerely doubt it's false since it was on national tv (I know, not the BEST argument..)
Did anyone else hear about this? Do we have an official source?

I've red that in a romanian newspaper as well, this morning. It's not sure about them running away after coming to South Africa or not making the trip in the last second.

It wouldn't be a very funny one. And the national television usually checks their sources, they tend to be more "professional" than most other stations. Last edit: 2010-06-17 22:29:45

Give it a day or so but stuff like this has been known to happen.
For example, several Cuban players have defected to the US when they visit for home games. Last edit: 2010-06-17 22:32:56

Something similar happened in the 2007 Pan American games in Rio when 2 cuban boxers ( Erislandy Lara and Guillermo Rigondeaux Ortiz) also deserted their country. After being arrested they came up with a random history and were sent back to Cuba to never take part in the sport again.

Jeez, if they really did run away to avoid going back to NK... NK will be pissed, probably going to hunt them down and make them play with balls all day.

Cuban adjustment law, thats the translation in english, dunno if u guys say it that way. If a cuban is on US grounds then he/she receives special treatment, he becomes a us citizen or somehitng like that im not sure.
Also, cuban athletes do that NOT because cuba is hell or they are mistreated or something, its because of the payment, most athletes love cuba and their people, and accept that money is what motivates them to leave, thats nothing like north korea, speak properly.

I already wrote this on the NK vs Brasil thread.
IT'S NOT THE FIRST TIME NK TEAM GETS OUT OF THE COUNTRY FFS! Stop with this concept (quick time to run!). Every summer/winter they go in training sessions just like most teams do. This winter they went to Antalya (Turkey) where they played with loads of teams for 2-3 weeks of training.
They first ignore you. After they laugh at you. Next they will fight you. In the end you will win.

For those who know what it is like outside of their homeland, (i.e. playing in Japan or other countries for different clubs) and experiencing first hand that they were fed lies when they were told they are the best nation in the world, it just might give them incentive to run away.
I'm sorry to tell you this but you are wrong about the family thing as well. Many North Koreans that have fled to Canada (living illegally) have abandoned their families in search of new lives or do not have immediate families. I actually know a North Korean first-hand he sells me my smokes and he works a cash job as a shop keeper. We've had some talks and he doesn't like talking about his past and doesn't open up but REALLY seems enjoys his job and his life. He gets paid 10.75/hour but he tells me how happy he is all the time.

Congratulations, you know one North Korean and you generalize this to the entire nation. While it's true some North Koreans would want to leave NK, I would think most of them have been properly brainwashed such that they wouldn't.
Also, this is NK's national football team, and I would like to think that they pride themselves in making it that far (they constantly talk about repeating history). I would also doubt they get treated as poorly as the other North Koreans. Also, as many people have already stated, this is not the first time their football team has left NK, and I can imagine many countries are better destinations than South Africa.
I am not saying there is zero possibility, but I just don't understand how people jump on these things so quickly without any confirmed sources (OP is our only source) and assume the "worst" of the NK team. Give me a break.

That happened all the time during the cold war, why would it be any different now? Peter Statsny, one of the greatest hockey players of time, defected to Canada when his team (Czechelslovakia - which was part of the soviet union at the time) played a game here. It wouldnt suprise me at all if they ditched the second they saw how much better life can be.

I know that they have such thing as a 'labour camp' which is really just a fancy term for a concentration camp. I know thatthis guy is the only person to have successfully escaped camp 14. which by all accounts is incredible.
I see what you mean about NK citizens being hand fed propaganda from birth but over time thousands have defected to other countries so there's at least a small minority who are willing to risk it/don't believe the lies their government teaches them.

The generalization doesn't come from me, but comes from the North Korean man himself after numerous talks. It is information on what he knows not me. Talking with this man has really brought some shit to perspective and debunks a lot of the information the mass-media spreads. Thanks for the congratulations although quite unnecessary.
The players may or not may not have fled, but I just want to state it is quite plausible.
Edit: I don't think the generalization was a far-fetched one at all. In qualitative sociology it is completely valid to state information from first-hand sources via interviews especially if the information is very hard to come by. I didn't make a strong claim, but refuted the misinformation posted above. If there is something wrong with this please PM me as I am new and you seem to be a more mature poster on teamliquid.

There might have been tighter security in those other places that prevented them from leaving. I'm not sure about this, but I'm pretty sure if they go to a US embassy they can go to the US and get citizenship if they wanted? Can anyone confirm or deny that?

Well, it is possible, but I barely expect them to do it since the ones who are sent anywhere from such regime countries are the ones party is sure about. Basically, either they are the most loyal by their own views or the most brainwashed.
My father has told me some stories about how it was when he was a sailor (we are a post USSR republic). Everyone was forcebly brainwashed with bullshit about what's happening in the world, how bad everyone else is, how "we" have to prove we're better and "they" are amoral capitalistic pigs, etc. And nobody without ties in the coutry was allowed to leave, basically if you didn't have any relatives or family, you wouldn't be able to leave the country.
I'm sure that this story, if it's true, is going to be heard of later. If it's not true, we'll never hear about it again, most likely. Because I doubt someone can cover a disappearance of 3 (or 4?) already listed people.

North Korean propaganda isn't about being the richest or having the most stuff (like food)
It's racial pride based (not the kill all others kind, or we are better etc) but mainly on the "purity" of koreans (which is a joke since they have not been that isolated and definitely have chinese/japanese/etc ancestors).
Anyway most north Koreans have a lot of pride in being korean, and view the rest of the world as oppressors. They don't necessarily blame the government since it is seen mainly as a military might and not really caring of economics aka the gov propaganda portrays the government only as a military force protecting them from the evils of the world (USA).
Which basically means they all know South Korea is wildly richer and has stuff like food, but they still have immense racial pride in some ingrained belief in purity of the korean people. That Kim Jong Il is protecting them and that south korea envies them for for being pure and not having American influences.
I highly doubt any of them would "escape", although some of the more intelligent who can reason past the stupidity of the propaganda might, especially with recent moves like abolishing the currency.
AKA the koreans in NK don't really want to escape en masse, a lot of them that do leave, return later with food/smuggling etc. The propaganda NK uses is extremely effective, even with how shitty it is they still have pretty good control. In fact most of the propaganda was originally devised from the Japanese occupation (where the idea of Korean purity etc was used by the japanese). The people that ran the north korean media/propaganda where actually originally Japanese supporters.
The reason they piss off the world so much is to strengthen their political position. Having imminent threats, condemnations, warship exercises nearby, can be easily manipulated in the press. With these threats the government can seem credible as a military power protecting the people, since it has failed utterly economically.
South Korea did not proceed with propaganda and greatly scaled it back, because it could easily destabilize the north. If you know recently they scaled back all propaganda since the North would basically be toppled if it actually happened, which would cause them to go to war in a last ditch effort. They are very unstable at the moment. Last edit: 2010-06-18 03:23:49

You don't have to be brainwashed all that badly to believe garbage. Just look at this thread and how much misinformation/ tabloid rumor they are willing to accept. It's really not that hard for people to be stupid lambs since theyre begging to be told what they want to believe.

No I don't think you get it.
They are free technically speaking (as citizens of DPRK), but would truly free men abandon the people they know and love to escape to a foreign country?
The concept of the nation's top-tier soccer players trying to make a run for it is sad, not because they are running away, but because it gives the world a glimpse on what it's like in North Korea.
How bad could it be over there? Actually wanting to start a new life in a foreign country not being able to understand the language and all, dealing with the culture shock, living in hiding (as an alien).
That is what I meant. I am just empathetic of the players. Last edit: 2010-06-18 03:51:51

I'm amazed you put that as part of an argument about why North Koreans wouldn't want to defect. I'd be surprised if food was viewed as a western luxury by starving peasants in NK. Not having stuff like food is one of the best reasons to leave.

Also, cuban athletes do that NOT because cuba is hell or they are mistreated or something, its because of the payment, most athletes love cuba and their people, and accept that money is what motivates them to leave, thats nothing like north korea, speak properly.

The odds are that their families will be sent to concentration camps if they flee, it's quite terrible. I've watched numerous documentaries and a couple of them talk about it when the whole family is basically executed or worked to death. [1]
1 = National.Geographic.Inside.Undercover.in.North.Korea
They interview a man that managed to escape over the North Korean border to South Korea, when he is asked
"What do you think happened to your family?"
He answers :"I would not like to talk about that."
It's a decent documentary.

Yo dawg I heard you like news and TL.
Sohu Sports News
Four players from the North Korean World Cup team have gone missing! So reports a Romanian poster on "TeamLiquid". Here is the entire post:
During the half-time break of the Argentina-South Korea game, I switched channels over to TVR1 (Romanian National Channel 1), and saw in the news that the team has lost contact with four of the players and has no idea of their whereabouts. The opinion of the channel is that these players are avoiding having to return to North Korea.
At the moment, this report has not appeared on any foreign media, so it's authenticity is yet to be verified, but the Romanian National News Channel reports couldn't have come out of nowhere. The post on international forum TeamLiquid elicited substantial response, with netizens contributing various opinions.
Pika Chu, also from Romania, reports: I saw it on a newspaper in Romania today, it could be that they went missing since reaching South Africa." A netizen from Singapore, Katsuge said: "These four players made the correct choice" Bulgarian poster ggrrg, agreed: "Honestly I don't think any of the team would want to return to a country like that, it's like hell."
Various American and Cuban netizens brought up the 2007 Pan-American Games, when two Cuban boxers went into hiding but were finally discovered, leading not only to deportation but lifetime boxing bans.
Most posters showed sympathy for the four North Korean players, and discussed the coal mining incident - a former assistant of the national team alleged : "If they had lost, they would be punished, and some of them would be sent to work in coal mines."

If the Chinese team had one half of the Korean team's pride in their country, we'd be regulars in the World Cup Finals.
This is a knavish conspiracy between South Korea and USA, who paid the local mafia to carry it out. North Korea should just nuke their bases.
Look how the Western media twists China. Chinese are sick of these opinions. Shameless Western media thinks it's so honorable, when it's a pile of shit itself. [rated like +300, higher than other comments, but apparently you can just spam click infinitely to uprate a comment]
It's gotta be fake, what about their family? Won't Sunny Kim (chinese nickname for Kim Jung Il) kill all their families?
We never should have supported North Korea against America in the first place! Then this hateful, shameful, sorrowful dictatorship wouldn't even have existed!
Why is there no news of the entire missing Chinese team?
If you'd rather be a refugee than return home, you can imagine what kind of country it's like. What about China? Don't think too highly of ourselves, it's even worse - it's wealthy people that emigrate to escape.

The World Cup is always a fascinating tournament as it constantly supplies moments of drama, genius and the absurd as FIFA have no idea of the whereabouts of four North Korean players.
Kim Myong, Kim Kyonh II, Na Chol and Pak Sung Hyok have literally disappeared as the four where nowhere to be found when North Korea took to the field in their Group G opener against the five-time champions Brazil.
A spokeperson from FIFA has admitted that they are also in the dark as to where the players could be because no one form North Korea has relayed the status of the players in question.
No comments or statements have been issued from the North Korea camp and the location of the four will remain a mystery until then.

i spent one year in the northeast part of china near the border of NK and China. I've met over 30 NK refugees in various circumstances, a few of them as taxi drivers, one was a doctor who treated me with acupuncture, a few were beggars. Also during my time there I also met many people who have crossed the border into NK to help with humanistic aid. These men and women have devoted over half their lives trying to help NK, some having even gone through incarceration and questionings during their brief time across the border.
I don't want to get all political here and all I have is anecdotal evidence, (albeit a lot of it), at the moment so I"ll keep it short. Those who thinks NK people are happy are seriously misinformed.
