5.7. Manual Network Configuration

While Network Managerprovides a relatively easy way to create and modify Oracle networkparameter files, many DBAs find it useful to occasionally (and somemore than occasionally) make manual modifications to one or more ofthese files. Such a practice, while not approved by Oracle, isacceptable as long as:

  • The DBA is knowledgeable about the parameters being modified.

  • The structure of the file is maintained.

  • The change is made with an appropriate editor that saves plain text (ASCII in most cases). Avoid word processors, which usually store other control characters with the text.

  • Backup copies are made of the files being changed—just in case!

Oracle Corporation states in their documentation that they will not support any Oracle network that has not been configured using Network Manager or Net8 Assistant. To our knowledge, Oracle has never withheld support. However, be cautious when making manual changes, and be aware that Oracle Support may take exception to the practice.
