Samsung Electronics is planning to increase its NAND flash contract prices in the second half of September due to tight supply, with the single-level-cell (SLC) segment likely to see a 10% rise, according to sources with memory module makers.
Citing one example, the sources said the current spot price for 8Gb SLC chips is US$19, which is higher than the contract prices Samsung set in the first half of September. Such differences between the contract and spot prices have prompted Samsung to consider raising the contract prices for the second half of the month, the sources said.
The sources indicated that Samsung may increase its prices 10% on average for its SLC chip prices. Multi-level-cell (MLC) chip prices are also likely to go up, but the rise may not be as high, the sources speculated.
NAND flash prices did not rise too much last week, because the products in the market were from lower-priced inventories, the sources remarked. With inventories clearing, prices will go up more significantly, the sources added.
The sources pointed out NAND flash has been in tight supply recently, with Samsung giving supply priorities to its first-tier clients. A-Data Technology and Transcend Information are two of Taiwan‘s memory module makers whose strong relationships with Samsung are facilitating their sourcing of NAND flash, the sources remarked.
