The power amplifier chip from SiGe Semiconductor Inc. (Ottawa) is claimed to be the thinnest device for Wi-Fi networks. Slated for 2.4-GHz band designs, the RangeCharger SE2523BU device comes in a miniature 16-pin, 3 by 3-mm2 QFN package. The SE2523BU paper-thin package touts a profile of just 0.5-mm (20-mils).
SiGe said its ultrathin design also reduces dissipation by 25 percent compared to competing products, making it suitable for embedding into portable battery-powered consumer electronics. The SE2523BU also integrates digital-enable circuitry, a power detector and biasing circuitry.
The power amp delivers up to +18.5-dBm power output (about 65-mW) with an EVM (error vector magnitude) spec of 2.5 percent (operating in IEEE-802.11g mode). All ACPR (adjacent channel power ratio) requirements are met while operating at +23-dBm output power (200-mW) in 802.11b mode.
The PA’s power detector is also claimed to improve stability since it’s immune to mismatches and exhibits less than 1.5-dB of variation with a 2:1 mismatch. The power detector stage also offers two selectable power detector slopes, permitting it to be used with multiple chip sets.
International Rectifier’s (El Segundo, Calif.) IRS2453D high-voltage, full-bridge IC driver for high-definition ballast applications touts simplified circuitry, previously unavailable features and extended lamp life.
The 600-volt, self-oscillating driver, for general lighting, outdoor street lighting, and projectors, integrates two high-side and two low-side gate drivers. The chip includes a simple RC network to program the oscillator, eliminating the need to synchronize two half-bridge drivers. In contrast, the company said, solutions using two SO-8 driver ICs require a separate oscillator to drive each half-bridge, resulting in unsymmetrical voltages across the load. In lighting applications, the mismatch can cause mercury migration, thus shortening lamp life. The IRS2453D overcomes this problem by driving both half-bridge drivers with a single oscillator to guarantee accurate matching over the complete temperature and supply voltage range.
Simplifying the overall design, the IRS2453D integrates both a latched and nonlatched shutdown input, and eliminates up to seven components. Its latched shutdown circuitry allows for implementation of various protection features such as cycle-by-cycle overcurrent detection, and open-load or short-circuit detection without additional components. The non-latched shutdown circuitry allows for easy interfacing to a microcontroller for use in a wider variety of Related Info

Linear Technology’s (Milpitas, Calif.) LT3476 DC/DC converter chip contains four independent driver channels that can each drive up to eight 1-amp LEDs in series. Thus the LT3476 can drive up to 32 1-amp LEDs for 100-watt LED applications while delivering efficiencies up to 96 percent.
Each channel provides dimming circuitry, which facilitates a dimming ratio of up to 1000:1. The chip’s fixed-frequency, current-mode architecture ensures stable operation over a wide range of supply voltages (2.8 to 16 volts). A frequency-adjust pin enables users to program the frequency between 200 KHz and 2 MHz to optimize efficiency while minimizing external component size
