Video Surveillance DVR Market Fragmenting

Aug 12, 2008 2:52 PM

The transition to networked video surveillance is driving a proliferation of product categories in the digital video surveillance market, according to research from MultiMedia Intelligence. Among the segments MultiMedia Intelligence identifies in the DVR market are Embedded DVRs, PC-Based DVR, Hybrid Network Video Recorder (NVR/DVR), Embedded NVR and NVR with network-based storage.

Traditional Embedded DVRs still dominate the overall video surveillance storage market, comprising 62 percent of the nearly $2 billion DVR market in 2007. However, growth has shifted to networked storage products. MultiMedia Intelligence expects the hybrid NVR/DVR segment, which supports both analog and Internet Protocol (IP) camera inputs, to be among the most compelling segments.

"The hybrid NVR/DVR market reflects the broader surveillance market," says Mark Kirstein, president of MultiMedia Intelligence. "IP surveillance cameras are growing quickly, but will not supplant CCTV cameras any time soon. Both analog and IP cameras will co-exist for a substantial period of time."

The NVR category is growing quickly as well. However this segment is split between two sub-segments. The software virtualized NVR category largely reflects a software-based solution, as the hardware tends to be industry standard network storage equipment. The embedded NVR category features a stand-alone hardware NVR, much like the traditional embedded DVR form-factor.

MultiMedia Intelligence's video surveillance research also found:
· The DVR market is migrating to higher compression video codecs; MPEG-4 and H.264, as well a dual-codecs.
· Increasing channel counts, migrating from 4 and 8 channel DVRs to 8 and 16 channel DVRs
· While CCTV cameras are currently the largest semiconductor segment in the video surveillance equipment market, by 2012 DVR/NVR equipment will become the largest semiconductor opportunity.

Long-Term Prospects Bright For Maturing PVR Market

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., January 14, 2008 - The Personal Video Recorder (PVR) market is starting to show signs of maturation, reports In-Stat (http://www.in-stat.com). These signs include expanding geographic availability of PVR products, particularly into Europe and Asia, and a leveling out of both PVR unit shipments and product revenues, the high-tech market research firm says. In 2008, PVR product unit shipments are forecasted to surpass 22.6 million, up from 19.6 million in 2007.

揕ong-term prospects for the market remain bright, as strong demand from pay-TV service providers for PVR-enabled digital set top box products will sustain growth,?says Mike Paxton, In-Stat analyst.

Recent research by In-Stat found the following:

  • The worldwide installed base of PVR products is on track to reach 44.6 million at year-end 2007, up from 33.9 million at the end of 2006.
  • TiVo remains the top PVR service provider, measured by total service subscribers. The rest of the top five PVR service providers are EchoStar, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and BSkyB.
  • By 2011, annual worldwide PVR product unit shipments are projected to reach 31.6 million.

DVR Market Growing Worldwide

Posted January 28th, 2008 by Jose Alvear

According to In-Stat, the DVR market is growing by leaps and bounds worldwide. They estimate that DVR unit shipments will reach 31.6 million by 2011 worldwide, up from 19.5 million in 2007.

In-Stat also says that TiVo is the top DVR company as measured by total subscribers. The next top providers are EchoStar, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, and BSkyB.

Apparently, lots of growth is happening in Europe and Asia. I think most of those are happening from IPTV deployments, since most IPTV services have DVR functionality and IPTV is
growing rapidly in Asia and Europe. As more companies around the world turn to IPTV, DVR usage and deployment will grow–both are intertwined.

Just to clarify, IPTV is commonly defined as broadcast TV delivered via broadband over a closed network, like phone lines (DSL) or fiber to the home. IPTV hasn’t made a big dent here in the U.S. since cable and satellite are the biggest TV providers. But AT&T’s U-Verse and Verizon’s FiOS TV are finally seeing subscribers in the hundreds of thousands here in the U.S. And those numbers will continue to grow. And many of those people will be using DVRs.
