Netbook Sales Overtake iPhone Sales

According to sales numbers from Gartner and DisplaySearch, 4.7 million iPhones were shipped in Q3 2008 compared to 5.6 million netbooks were sold in the same period. This is the first such quarter where netbook sales have overtaken iPhone sales.

Although there were rumors a few months back that Apple was working on its own netbook, Steve Jobs has repeatedly commented that he sees the netbook market as insubstantial. He’s clearly been shown to be wrong about his latter point - it seems even Steve Jobs is not infallible.

There’s still time for an Apple netbook; perhaps this new development will change the company’s mind. Whether the new device might fall in the ordinary netbook price range is another question.
