The furthest distance in the world.”
Some of you may have come across one of the following two posts “The Furthest distance in the World”, “世界上最遥远的距离.” Some BBSes have the Chinese version down as translated from the “English version” while a few even claim the English version as the work of Tagore. Is it really?
Let me put the so-called English version down for you to read. Go through it slowly with an eye for faults, and see what you can come up with.
The furthest distance in the world
The furthest distance in the world
Is not between life and death
But when I stand in front of you
Yet you don’t know that
I love you
The furthest distance in the world
Is not when i stand in font of you
Yet you can’t see my love
But when undoubtedly knowing the love from both
Yet cannot
Be together
The furthest distance in the world
Is not being apart while being in love
But when plainly can not resist the yearning
Yet pretending
You have never been in my heart
The furthest distance in the world
Is not <--
But using one’s indifferent heart
To dig an uncrossable river
For the one who loves you
The first thing that would strike you is probably the word “furthest.” Your grammar teacher must have told you that for distance, the word should be “farthest.” The second is that the verb “is” is missing after all the “but”s. Granted, with poetic license, you can get away with anything. However, that still does not explain why the sentence is incomplete after “is that” in the last stanza.
Having lots of free time on my hands ( I am a retiree), I decided to investigate. Baidu and Google are great help ( BTW: sell Baidu, they are overpriced. Ha Ha. Too late already.) I discovered that the origin of the Chinese version was based on a two line couplet by 张小娴
(I usually will include the source of the information. But my notes got garbled up—a dog ate it—and I no longer have the link. I guess a quick check with Baidu would have done the trick, but I am too lazy to do so.)
Anyway. The Chinese version that has been making the rounds on the Internet goes like this: (the part marked with the **** is the missing line in the English version.)

If you think this is the end of the story, think again.

Recently, I came across two more of the same “English version”, except this time, the missing line is in place. I have to kick myself on this because I neither copied down the “poem” nor saved the link.
But the “second” Chinese version I found, I not only saved the link, but the whole poem as well:

So folks, here is something you can do to amuse yourselves. Write your own Chinese, English, or both new versions of this for your own entertainment, or upload it on to the Net, with the same title, and confuse the hell out of those going around reprinting this stuff.
