From a regional perspective, three new economic zones with central Tibet as the core and east and west Tibet as two wings are rising in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR).
The three zones have gained a rapid development in the past few years, thanks to improved transportation which has made a breakthrough in the isolated development in different areas of Tibet and enhances the optimized flow of economic factors as well as various resources.
The Central Economic Zone geographically includes Lhasa, Shigatse Prefecture, Lhoka Prefecture, Nyingchi Prefecture and Nagqu Prefecture, taking up over 70% areas and population of the entire region.
The economic accumulation effect works well with Lhasa as the center of economic circles. Statistics shows that, Lhasa contributes to the important part of Tibet's growth as the core economic zone, with a total gross domestic product of 15.427 billion yuan and a fixed asset investment of 13.61 billion yuan in 2009, accounting for 35% of the regional GDP and fixed asset investment. Lhasa's total retail sales of social consumables reached 7.59 billion yuan, taking up almost half of that of the whole region last year.
The Chamdo Economic Zone in east Tibet has achieved substantial results in mining exploration, water resource construction based on its natural resources, as well as the development of tourism, trade and logistics industries, etc.
