More than 6 million census-takers have been hired to document demographic changes in China. Nannan looks at how the massive tally is reaching even the most remote corners of the country.

One of the first to be counted on Monday morning in Beijing's eastern Chaoyang District was Zhou Delin. He provided census-takers with detailed information by filling out a two-page questionnaire.

Among the data provided was his name, level of education and residential conditions.

Zhou Delin, Beijing resident, said, "The national census is a big event for everyone. Everyone should actively participate. It's our duty as residents to make our society even better."

In Hongze county in east China's Jiangsu Province, census-takers took to the waterways on the eve of the tally's official start.

Twenty census-takers went about their work on boats around the Hongze Lake. About 3 thousand people work on waterways in Hongze county, making the task of collecting information difficult for census-takers.

During their boat-to-boat visits, they collected all workers' information and were finished by the end of the day.

About 40 thousand census-takers also knocked on doors in southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region. Over the next 10 days they will visit 600,000 households, as well as villages and universities in the region.
