China prepares for its 60th anniversary
Chinese citizens and government workers have been preparing for months for their upcoming celebration of the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China on October 1st. Parts of Beijing have been shut down several times, allowing for rehearsals of a once-in-a-decade military parade, multiple artistic performances and shows, fireworks and more. Security concerns are high as well, bringing out large details of security personnel and equipment. Collected here are images from the past several weeks of people around China preparing to celebrate their National Day. (37 photos total)

60 years ago, when the United States were already the most advanced industrial country in the world, China was not even able to produce a single iron nail. You can see how it has changed since then.
A person from a country without the ability to produce iron nails will never be respected as much as the one from the country with the power of affecting the whole world's economics.

Very proud and totally supportive of the celebration. The benefit is multifold. Firstly, the military parade will make foreign/domestic adversaries think twice before doing anything unwise. Secondly, the economic spin-off will be huge. All the flags, lanterns, equipments, etc are produced domestically, mainly by family-run small and medium sized enterprises. The spending will boost their income, and they will in turn spend their income on consumer goods or invest in their factories/companies hiring more employees. Good job!

Type 99 tank looks real cool!
Western democracy builds entirely on the tradition of ancient Greece and Romans. If we totally accept west's institution and political system, even if it may work well( I strongly doubt that.....look at the chaos and poverty in India.....lol), what will make us distinguishable from the west and others?
I strongly hold the opinion that the decline of China in the first half of twenty century is neither because our culture is inferior, nor because our race and talents are condescending to the west. We lost all the wars because we were backward in military and technology. And nowaday, as we rebuild our economiyand military force, it is a matter of time before we can replace United States as the leader of the world. I have faith in it.

I hope not to see Chinese against Chinese. Here is great because you have people with a variety of inputs, but for me it is rare. It takes courage and breaking the status quo for a Chinese to say things about the gov't. Chinese gov't for sure brainwashes in many ways, and one big way is to make people feel from deep in their hearts that loving the party is loving the country, loving the country, is loving the party.. So some patriots think that people who criticize the gov't are being unpatriotic, that they don't love China.....
And it is really obvious that some people feel they have to put up a front for Westerners, they won't look at the two sides, only what they see as China's so called glory.
I think that kind of person would be smarter to realize that things are not 100%, and that 'China' can have big problems and still be great. The gov't is severely repressive, untruthful and corrupt, but that is not the whole story. So people who make criticisms are just rational, and a lot closer to dealing with the issues, than the people who deny the issues and insist that everything is great.
Seeing so many opposing viewpoints definitely shows that not all Chinese people are brainwashed, it's really refreshing. I know it must be hard for CHinese to voice something other than what CCP insists, even fear for your lives, for sure, also fear of the mob mentality, people calling you 'not real Chinese', remember Grace Wang? But it is obvious which people truly have integrity.

Last year many jealous freaks such as Mia Fart Low, Sharon Stoned, and Richard Gerbil Gere called the Beijing Olympics "Genocide Olympics". and it turned out to be the best Olympics ever. This year those jealous freaks are at it again bashing China. One thing I want to ask those jealous freaks is this: Does China need your approval to host a party? Are they forcing you to watch the parade? If the answer is no, then it is about time for you to mind your own business.

On the other hand, i'd like to see my country show its power. I don't care it is from government or CCP. First, I can ensure you that Chinese people can achieve this site by simply using a proxy. I don't know whether other people are happy about the show. In my opinion, it is a waste of money. I agree that some kind of celebration should be applicated, but it brings trouble to us. Some public facilities are stopped for the sake of this celebration. In fact, most Chinese love our country, although we like to critisize some unreasonable things. However, there are something I want to but cannot express. Anyway, freedom is something amazing.

Great pictures and I was there to see the rehearsal, a spectacular show!
But despite all the hypes about the event, I'm looking forward to that day when the government says we gonna block the streets for a national day rehearsal 4 times and spend millions, the people will simply reply: "na ah, you ain't gonna, try 2 rehearsals and half a million instead." and the government will actually listen and make adjustments...
One commenter asked the right question, is this event for the people or the government? At this point is more for the government, the citizens do support it because millions of people's life have improved and are significantly better than 60 years ago, and i'm confident that china will work hard on its rights related stuff.
It's time that the citizens realize their rights to be a citizen - this is an important step. The rights activist had it all wrong, you can't expect the government to do it, it has to come from the people. Its only gonna make china a better place; and just because you want more rights and are sensitive about it, doesn't mean you don't support your country.

but i believe CCP will get changes, though it might take a lot of years.
CCP will get better because Chinese people will make it change and CCP itself want to change.
We don't have a good law system now, lots of corruption happens because of there is no rules or the rules are not specified and difficult to execute

I want to say that I am suprised to see the HUGE changes everytime I go back. Most peoples there that I know of are busy making money and enjoying the worldly material that they have never been able to get access to up to now. I think the government is doing a good job to keep such a vast country peacefully together. They call them communist, but I would rather think they are nationalistic capitalist, if there is such a term.

Just compare 60 years ago with now, true, a lot has been accomplished but the values have certainly changed. From banning any personal possessions etc these days Chang An Jie is lined with luxury cars, including government plated western manufactured rolling steel (preferred by the leaders unless they drive in public).
Great pics though and I do admire what has been accomplished...

I'm Taiwanese, and I am naturally worried about P.R. China's goals regarding my country.
But it is good to see how far China has come. A lot of westerners don't realize what China was like before the PRC, and that even though a lot of aspects of China look bad right now, they could've been worse. The KMT that preceeded the CCP was pathetic, and was justly kicked out. Unfortunately, they came here to Taiwan, where they continued their incompetence and corruption (fortunately for us, massing American funding and easier circumstances - a small country with an educated population and pretty good infrastructure left by the Japanese - helped them succeed in the long run).
Happy birthday, PRC! We're nervous about you, but we'd like to be close neighbors and cousins if one day you're ready for it.

Socialism is good, socialism is good!
In socialist nations, the people have high status.
Overthrow the reactionaries. Imperialism flees with its tail between its legs.
The entire nation is in great unity and has raised the socialist construction to a new height, to a new height.
Socialism is good, socialism is good!
The people protect the socialist system.
The popular capacity is solid, the resistance of reactionary cliques is completely futile.
The socialist society will definitely succeed, a communist society will definitely be achieved, will definitely be achieved!
The Communist Party is good! The Communist Party is good!
The Communist Party is a good leader for the people.
It holds its promises and works of any heart for the people.
Firmly anchored to the Communist Party, it is necessary to complete, complete the construction of our great fatherland!
The Communist Party is good! The Communist Party is good!
The Communist Party guides China on the way of the power.
The popular capacity is solid, the resistance of reactionary cliques is destined to fail.
The socialist society will definitely succeed, a communist society will definitely be achieved, will definitely be achieved!

Our lives have changed dramatically through these 60 years. Though there still exists some disharmony facts in our country, such as poverty, unemployment or trampling of democracy, no one can deny those phenomena also happen in capitalist throughout the world. But we have to face the fact that we are getting better and better than ever. I don't see any inadequacy of celebrating our county's 60th birthday.
Great country!

I see, I see, there are some "true" Chinese writing long English to complain "freedom", "democracy". Why I never see a peasant worker complain? Are they happy? They build majestical houses for their senior brethren under rather low pay, the "senior brethren" then compain freedom in the same house with internet and air condition.
The "class struggle" ideology of communist is reasonable, Mao's is still favored by many Chinese because he played a positive role for them. He is hated by some people because he really made them suck.

you are absolutely right about china gov's techiniques.
i celebrate for the country itself having stood for 60 years;
Meanwhile, i feel strong sadness Communist Party has trampled human right for 60 years.
High GDP increment rate does not come in vain.
I can see the most brutal exploiritation on low society ppl.
Yet producing over 3500 billionares all over the country,
amongst which 95% are officials.
This explains why China has grown into the world's 2nd largest luxury goods client.
In the same time, low level workers have to spend their whole life time to
afford a C-class "room" in a flat.
There are up to 1000 high school student suicides every year.
They died for the entrance fee for colleages after receiving the offer.
... ...
To brain wash these poor ppl's minds, China funds a huge office to censor
all news sources.
The result is, most of these ppl actually feel they are in happiness thx to the
kind gov. [this is a pile of crap, if u can understand chinese on tv.]
I understand most developed countries has gone thru such cruel times since
the beginning of Industrial Revolution.
However, this fact doesn't make itself "justice" for humanity.
Luckily, nowadays more and more youngs start to realize how this whole complex
goes, and begin to resist to infomation poisons.
... ...
Finally, i'm no politician and feel no interest in it.
The sad situations here make us responsible to bring up the hidden truth to
every ppl en-goved by China.
We become the alleged "revolutionists".

Capitalism and communism have drawbacks, we just choose the appropriate model of development we have, for all you have no right to accuse. Do not flaunt your human rights! In Iraq, in Afghanistan, you've done, the whole world to see, you do not deserve to mention human rights in the word. This is what I want to say.
French military parade not seen you accuse the U.S. military parade is also not seen you accuse, why is the parade that you would want to blame. I am proud of my country, but you? Go for your so-called human rights Rejoice

I can tell you most western media's websites are not blocked in China, but we don't like them, just like they don't like us.
At this moment, we are so proud for our country. It's true that there are many problems not fixed yet in this country, but we are progressing steadily. This process still need a long period of time. So why not keep talking in a equal and friendly environment. We are willing to learn more from your positive suggestions.
