Chinese netizens and commentators Saturday praised leaders who honored national heroes on the National Day holiday Friday, and called for commemoration ceremonies to be held annually.

On Friday, President Hu Jintao, Premier Wen Jiabao and other leaders laid flower baskets at the Monument to the People's Heroes in Tian'anmen Square in honor of those who sacrificed their lives to build the nation.

The ceremony was attended by more than 150,000 people from across the country.

In a commentary posted on eastday.com, one of China's major internet portals, "Yiyin" suggested that a commemoration ceremony be held annually to remind people of the past and teach China's youngsters to cherish today.

"People should not only think of the National Day as a joyful occasion, they should also remember the hardship to establish the country," wrote Yiyin.

"We should be happy to see the progress that our country has made, but at the same time, we need such an annual activity to remind people of the hard struggle," Yiyin said in the article.

In another commentary posted Saturday on scol.com.cn, another major internet portal based in southwest China's Sichuan Province, commentator Lin Wei said the commemorations were meaningful and reminded people to be thankful.

Local party leaders and people in many provinces, municipalities, and autonomous regions, including Shanghai, Chongqing, Jiangxi, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, visited local monuments or cemeteries to honor heroes during the holiday.

In southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, Bo Xilai, the city's Communist Party Secretary, visited the Cemetery of Revolutionary Martyrs at Geleshan Friday, according to the local television.

"We should always remember the martyrs for what they did to build our nation," said Bo.

In Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, many people, including primary school children, laid flowers at the Monument to the Revolutionary Martyrs in the People's Park of Nanning, the regional capital, Friday.

Sun Ruyin, a six-grade primary school student, said she felt excited to participate in the activity.

"We should not forget the martyrs, because they have helped to create our happy lives now, and we should cherish what we have," she said.

Zhou Qiuguang, deputy chairman of People's Political Consultative Conference of Changsha City, capital of Hunan Province, told the Changsha Evening Post newspaper that he had suggested last year that national leaders honor the national heroes on the National Day every year and he was happy to see the suggestion realized.

"It shows our country's leaders respect history and it's a good patriotic lesson for the youngsters," the Changsha Evening Post quoted Zhou as saying.
