Several media reports recently said that there have been several infants found with symptoms of premature rapid development due to excess hormones in Wuhan, Jiangxi and Shandong provinces, and that all these infants had previously consumed Syrutra milk powder after they were born. Therefore, Syrutra milk powder is suspected of causing these symptoms in infants.

Syrutra Nutritional Food Company responded on its official Web site on Aug. 8 that the products they produce and sell are safe and have no illegal additives or hormones. Syrutra products have been repeatedly tested by government departments at all levels and no quality problems have been found.

In addition, Syrutra have made large investments in basic research of nutrition for infants and young children. Syrutra is very confident in the safety of its products, especially the amount of hormones.

Syrutra believes that the reports on Phoenix TV Station are out of context, have interfered with its normal business operations and are the cause of the hormone incident, according to a statement on Syrutra's official Web site.

Chen Junshi, a researcher from the Institute of Nutrition and Food Safety under the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention and an academician from the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said that there is currently no evidence to prove that the milk powder led to these infants' premature puberty.

"This is different from the melamine case. Before the investigation into the melamine milk powder, there were hundreds of infants who showed abnormal conditions after consuming the milk powder in Gansu." Chen said.

As of now, there is no conclusion as to whether Syrutra milk powder is the major cause of these infants' precocious conditions.

The Ministry of Health is aware of relevant reports and is monitoring the incident, Deng Haihua, a spokesperson from the Ministry of Health, said to Beijing News on the night of Aug. 8.
