According to current plans, China will launch 14 meteorological satellites in 10 years and the Fengyun-3 B satellite will be launched at the end of 2010, according to Yang Jun, director of the National Meteorological Satellite Center on Aug. 8.

The Fengyun-4 satellite project has already been authorized by the government, and the development work of the satellite has officially been launched. The Fengyun-4 satellite is expected to be launched around 2015.

The gap between Chinese meteorological satellites and the world's advanced level will narrow significantly by 2020, while the application of meteorological satellites will enter a steady development phase. Satellite data will account for more than 90 percent of the application in numerical prediction model data assimilation.

The monitoring capacity in terms of natural disasters, environment, agriculture, ecology and oceans will improve remarkably, while the satellites will play a great role in preventing and mitigating disasters and dealing with climate change with improved efficiency, Yang said.

"The number of users of Fengyun satellites has grown rapidly in recent times, and ever more neighboring countries and users worldwide are using Fengyun satellite information. The Fengyun satellite belongs to China as well as the world," Yang said.
