With the attack of the most severe cold wave seen in the past five years, many regions in northern China have suffered strong winds, rain and snow as well as drastic temperature drops.

The China National Meteorological Center (NMC) forecasts the cold wave will rapidly move southwards and sweep most of southern China. The temperature in some regions of southern China will drop by 12 to 14 degrees Celsius and will be coupled with strong winds.

Affected by the cold wave, there have been successive snowfalls in regions including Xinjiang, Ningxia, Gansu and Qinghai, and even heavy snowfalls and blizzards in certain areas. The accumulated snow in Suzhou District of Jiuquan was 9 centimeters on Oct. 24, the strongest snowfall in the area over the same period in the past 70 years.

Apart from rain and snow, the cold wave has resulted in further temperature drops in many northern regions. Data shows that at 2 a.m. on Oct. 24, the temperature was down by 6 to 12 degrees Celsius from a day earlier in northern Qinghai, Gansu, Ningxia, central and northern Shaanxi, northern and western Shanxi, central and northern Hebei, Beijing, Tianjin, central and western Inner Mongolia, northern Shandong, most areas of Liaoning, central and eastern Jilin and central and eastern Heilongjiang.

NMC experts said that the cold wave that started on Oct. 21 is perhaps the most severe during the same period over the past five years.
