MDs Often Keep Quiet About Incompetent Colleagues
Doctors like to think that they’ll turn in colleagues who are doing a particularly bad job. But it’s not sostraightforward when physicians are faced with such a colleague, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital surveyed almost 2,000 physicians in a variety of fields around the country. About two-thirds said that they should and would report animpaired or incompetent colleague. Seventeen percent said they know of a physician who should be reported, and about 67 percent of that group did issue a complaint.
马萨诸塞州总医院的研究人员对全国各领域的近2000名内科医师进行了调查。其中，约三分之二的人表示他们会检举不称职的同事，这是应该的。17%的人说他们知道有这么个不称职的医师，他们中67%的人都对此抗议过。
Minority physicians or docs in small practices were less likely to blow the whistle than hospital staff. They thought it would do no good, someone else would deal with it, or that there would beretribution.
和大医院的职工们相比，小医院的小部分内科医师或者是医生不太会告状。他们觉得这样做没什么用处，会有人处理的，或者觉得这些人迟早会得到报应的。
The researchers were particularly concerned that one-third of all docs surveyed didn’t think their incompetent colleagues should be reported. And that a third of physicians who actually saw someone perform poorly in fact did not say anything. The study authors urge more education on the subject, and protection and privacy forwhistleblowers. All in keeping with the Hippocratic oath: first, do no harm.
