British Petroleum (BP)'s CEO Tony Hayward said Sunday he will not resign over the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico and is optimistic about his company’s recovery from the incident.

Hayward said he has "absolute intention of seeing this through to the end, while telling BBC's "Andrew Marr Show" that he would not quit.

"We are going to stop the leak. We're going to clean up the oil, we're going to remedy any environmental damage and we are going to return the Gulf coast to the position it was in prior to this event," Hayward said.

"That's an absolute commitment, we will be there long after the media has gone, making good on our promises," he added.

The CEO also noted that BP's containment procedures are doing well by having captured about 10,000 barrels of oil within the last 24 hours, and BP will restore the gulf to its original state.

He added that a further containment system will be implemented in this coming week and when those two are in place, "vast majority" of the oil could be contained.

BP's latest containment effort involves a cap placed over the leak that gathers the oil, allowing it to be siphoned up via a pipe to a container ship.
