Venture capitalist Simeon Simeonov has made a post on his VCblogHigh Contrast that he claims to be an insider tip on thehotlyanticipated, yet still speculative, Google Phone. AccordingtoSimeonov, Google has charged Andy Rubin with the task ofcreatingthe G-Phone.
Rubin, the founder of Sidekick maker Danger, arrived atGooglewhen the search giant acquired Android, his wirelesssoftwarestartup. Under Rubin works a team of about 100 peoplereportedlyslaving away on the device. Simeonov believes that Rubinis workingdirectly on the OS of the device.
He goes on to cite Google’s acquisitions of Reqwireless andSkiaas definite indications that it is working on creating itsownhandset. Reqwireless creates mobile applications and,beforegetting bought, Skia had developed a vector-basedpresentationengine capable of rendering “state-of-the-art” 2Dgraphics onmobile phones.
Semeonov sees these acquisitions as evidence of G-Phonerumblingsat the Google lab. He also claims that, in contrast to theGoogleOrange HTC phone rumors, the new device is being developedinconjunction with Samsung (citing this press release) and theSwitchcodename is once again being bandied about.
The new device is said to be similar to a similar to aBlackberryin design. It will be coded on a C++ core with an OSbootstrap.Like the Sidekicks, Java will be optimized to run on thedevice.And it will include a multitude of services like G-Talkandsuch.

I’m going to go out on a generously solid limb here and agreewithMr. Simeonov. It’s not a stretch to believe that Google wouldindeedbe working on such a device. Distributing content, liketargetedads, wirelessly would be a hell of a lot cheaper than thanpushingit through pipes. Plus it’s hardly controversial these daysto claimthat wireless is the future.
