Interviewing Tips

We will go over these with you before the interview

  • The purpose of an interview is an exchange of information.
  • The goal is for everyone to get enough information to make a decision.
  • You do not have a decision to make unless you get an offer.
  • Your goal is to get an offer.

Things to remember:

  1. You only have one chance to make a first impression.
  2. Really LISTEN.  You need to “take temperatures” so you can respond appropriately. Be prepared enough that you can focus not on yourself, but the person who is interviewing you.
  3. Be prepared. We will help you know as much as possible about the company and people you will meet. Anticipate questions such as “tell me about yourself”.  They want to talk about your professional background, not your personal life. Make sure you understand the question before you answer it. Clarify.  Relate the answers to their questions in terms of what you have done, rather than what you would do. Answer honestly and succinctly. Try to counter any negative with a positive. Think in terms of what you can do for the company.
  4. Accentuate the positive. Make a list of questions that you need answered in order to make a decision. If you are uncomfortable asking a question ask us, we’ll get the answer. Keep your questions positive.  Do not ask “cornering questions”. Do not ask questions that put them on the spot. Write your questions down, it’s easy to forget.
  5. Stay away from money and benefits. If someone asks what it would take get you onboard, don’t lock yourself in to a salary that could be too high or too low. Best answer is “I would consider a reasonable offer”.  Try not to negotiate salary; that is our job.
  6. Ask for the job.  Enthusiasm is priceless!

Must ask questions:

  1. Ask everyone who interviews you, “what excites you about this company, what do you like about working here?” This gives you insight I into the company and the individual.  Do NOT ask “what don’t you like?” If there is anything negative, let them bring it up. Listen between the lines
  2. Ask everyone who interviews you “Do you have any concerns we haven’t addressed?” This not only allows you to answer anything that might not have been covered: it also gives you a better understanding of how they feel toward you.

Always:

  • Get the name and the correct spelling of everyone who takes the time to interview you.
  • Promptly send a follow up thank you letter (or email).
