A VICE chief of the airport police has been put under investigation after he reportedly threw a grand wedding banquet for his daughter Sunday night, the city’s public security bureau said yesterday.

This followed a recent case in which an official in Lianjiang City, Guangdong, was punished for throwing a lavish house-warming party.

The Southern Metropolis Daily yesterday said more than 1,000 guests attended the banquet thrown by a vice chief of the airport branch of the city’s public security bureau, identified only as Liu, at the upscale Haizhucheng Restaurant in Nanshan.

The banquet occupied around 110 dining tables in the 1,000-square-meter banquet hall, featuring a seafood-themed wedding menu coupled with red wine.

A Rolls-Royce parked at the gate of the restaurant had been rented for the wedding, friends of the bridegroom told the Daily.

Liu, who spent more than one hour on a toast tour at the banquet, said he was aware of the Lianjiang official’s home warming incident, but he had thrown the party in accordance with the expectations of his clan.

He said his family had lived in the city for several generations and had many local friends and relatives. “More than 80 percent of the guests were family relatives and old friends,” he told the Daily.

Liu said he didn’t invite any leaders from his bureau and all the colleagues who attended “had come to help.”

Zhou Baojun, assistant to the director general of the city’s public security bureau, said an investigation would proceed quickly and the media would be informed of the result.
