The revival of an old passion, IHC Merwede moves into Deep Sea Mining
The awareness that the deep sea can provide mankind with a wealth of minerals dawned in 1868 with the discovery of polymetallic nodules in the Kara Sea. In 1872-76, the HMS CHALLENGER, a British naval corvette crammed with officers, crew and scientists, set out on a scientific expedition.

About Deep Sea Mining
IHC Deep Sea Dredging & Mining specializes in deepwater technology. New developments and business drivers are presenting the dredging industry with new opportunities and challenges in deep sea exploration. Ground-breaking technology is being developed in this area by combining expertise and experience with intensive research and development.
Dredging technology has been expanding its horizons since the discovery of the treasures of the deep sea. Deep Sea Dredging or Mining is a greenfield activity since no proven technology is available for deep sea activities. A serious transition is needed in order to develop new excavation techniques and vertical transport systems for deep sea activities. The main challenges are the hyperbaric conditions, the slurry transport, the remote control and
maintenance aspects.
Vision
With our unique expertise in maritime excavation and slurry transportation, IHC Merwede generates end-to-end, technically and economically feasible deep sea dredging and mining concepts. This by close cooperation with our customers, offshore suppliers and partners and by applying proven technology in the offshore market.
