"‘Liberty Enlightening the World.‘
So (Frédéric-Auguste) Bartholdi named his copper-skinned goddess, lifting a torch and stepping out of broken shackles. Her tablet, a meaningful symbol to his fellow Freemasons, represents the rule of law and is inscribed in Roman numerals July 4, 1776. To hold this 151-foot [46-meter] statue against the Atlantic gales, he called on the brilliant bridge engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel for the tallest iron support of its day."

With crowns of flowers in their hair, Tahitian women watch an outrigger canoe race, part of Tahiti‘s most important festival, Heiva i Tahiti. Held annually from mid-June to mid-July, this festival coincides with French Polynesia‘s Autonomy Celebration on June 29th and France‘s Bastille Day on July 14th and is just one way French Polynesians are keeping their culture alive with traditional dances, fire walking competitions, and typical Tahitian sports races (like palm-tree climbing and stone lifting).

Dressed in traditional Islamic abayas, two women search for a place to picnic near Beirut, Lebanon‘s famous Pigeon Rocks in 2005. Although Lebanon is about 60 percent Muslim, it also has large Christian and Druze populations, making it one of the most diverse countries in the Middle East.
Just over four miles (seven kilometers) from Beirut‘s city center, Israeli aircraft bombed Lebanon‘s international airport on July 13, 2006. The air strikes were in retaliation for the capture of two Israeli soldiers and the killing of eight more the day before in a cross-border raid by Hezbollah, a Shiite Muslim militant group based in Lebanon. Today, the conflict continues as Israel targets Hezbollah strongholds in Beirut and its suburbs and Hezbollah sends rockets deep into Israel.

With an elevation of 5,300 feet [1,615 meters], the massive granite wall took four experienced climbers three weeks to climb. Taking a break to wait out dangerous weather, the crew bolted their tents to the wall and made a hanging camp.

During an encephalitis outbreak in Chicago, a scientist searches for its carriers in a watery tunnel. Although most mosquito-born illnesses have been virtually wiped out in North America, the United States is still vulnerable to the viral disease, which was responsible for 150 human deaths and 2,000 illnesses in 1975.

A young mouse lemur gets its daily sustenance from an eye-dropper. Unique to Madagascar, some 20 lemur species flit through the forests, resembling creatures put together from odds and ends of the animal kingdom: rodent‘s teeth, bat‘s ears, monkey‘s hands and feet, and flowing fox tails.

A couple of mule deer are on the lookout for wolves and other predators in a meadow in Yellowstone National Park. Although it was once thought that wolves would only cull the old and sick members of a herd, research has found that wolves take the youngest deer first, those less than a year of age.
