About Japanese Sun Bug (Jewel Beetle)

The history of the Tamamushi
“It is surprising how many people have said they have discovered tamamushi beetles which have been kept in boxes in closets by their grandmothers” says Raymond. There is an old wive's tale in Japan which says if a tamamushi is kept in one's closet, one will have manykimonos. A similar tale says that if a man keeps a tamamushi beetle in his wallet, that he will come into money.
The most famous work, which uses tamamushi wings as decoration is the tamamushi-no-Zushi or Tamamushi Cabinet, which looks like an alter. This national treasure, now preserved inHouryuu-ji Temple (Nara) uses the wings of approximately 4000 beetles and was made around 1300 years ago. The wing decorations on the cabinet have withstood time extremely well, and have faded very little. The wings of a tamamushi are ‘chitin' which is a substance that does not degenerate or discolour easily.
As Tamamushi products keep their colour through many generations the wings were also once popular for decorating horse harnesses and saddles, clothes, the nock of arrows, and sheaths for small swords.
Further reseacrh lead to the discovery that the use of the history of tamamushi products went back even beyond the Tamamushi-no-Zushi, as far as the Yayoi period.
The wa-jin(Japanese people) of theYayoi period would use the beetle in hair-pieces and other ornamental purposes. The beetle wings were also used in the 5th century Korean Emperor's crown (kammuri). The Korean kammuri is made of thin hammered gold which has many holes like latticework. The tamamushi wings were used for decorating the back of the kammuri and would sparkle in the sunlight when the emperor moved. When the tomb of the Korean Emperor was excavated approximately 30 years ago, many tamamushi wings were discovered intact, although their bodies had decomposed long ago. As there are no tamamushi in Korea, the beetles used in the Emperor' s crown must have been imported from Japan.
