Picture the scene: the battery on your mobile phone has run out. You can’t make any calls for help and no one can contact you. You are all alone---well, not quite. Just reach into your pocket and take out a piece of sugar. Put it into the battery, wait a minute and you’re back on the phone.
Thanks to a couple of American scientists, this situation could become real. Swadesh Chaudhuri and Derek Lovley have invented the “bacteria battery”---powered by bacteria that eat sugar and turn it into electricity. “This is a special organism,” Lovley said. “You can harvest enough electricity to power a cell phone battery for about four days from a spoonful of sugar.”
In the past, bacteria batteries have been expensive and not long-lasting. But this battery uses more efficient bacteria that can turn 80 percent of sugar into electricity energy. This is 30 percent more than similar batteries can manage.
The bacteria battery could become as small as a household battery. It’s also cheap and stable, as sugar can be taken from waste and crops. But the sugar to electricity process is slow: it could take weeks for the bacteria to digest a cup of sugar. And it produces “greenhouse” gases which pollute the environment.
The scientists understand there is a lot more work to be done. “It is still young,” said Lovley. “Where we are now is where solar power was 20 or 30 years ago.” But he believes the battery could be used in scientific equipment at the bottom of the ocean. Other ideas include using sugar in the blood to run medical devices in the human body, and taking sugar from animal waste to provide energy to power homes in rural areas.
65.     Which of the following is NOT the strong point of the newly-developed battery?
A. Convenient.                     B. Stable.        C. Inexpensive.                    D. Quick.
66.     How will the scientists improve the new battery?
A. Increase the bacteria.                             B. Solve the pollution problem.
C. Bring down the price.                                   D. Change the size.
67.     The underlined sentence in the last paragraph actually means________.
A. the bacteria battery shares some similarities with solar energy.
B. scientists will continue their work until they find solar energy.
C. there is much room for the improvement of the bacteria battery.
D. the bacteria battery will get popular in 20 or 30 years.
68.     According to the passage, who will find the bacteria battery less useful?
A. Farmers.                  B. Divers.              C. Doctors.                         D. Electricians.

Space is a dangerous place, not only because of meteors (流星)but also because of rays from the sun and other stars. The atmosphere again acts as our protective blanket on earth. Light gets through, and this is essential for plants to make the food which we eat. Heat, too, makes our environment endurable. Various kinds of rays come through the air from outer space, but enormous quantities of radiation from the sun are screened off. As soon as men leave the atmosphere they are exposed to this radiation, but their spacesuits or the walls of their spacecraft, if they are inside, do prevent a lot of radiation damage.
Radiation is the greatest known danger to explorers in space. The unit of radiation is called ‘rem’ . Scientists have reasons to think that a man can put up with far more radiation than 0.1 rem without being damaged; the figure of 60 rems has been agreed on. The trouble is that it is extremely difficult to be sure about radiation damage----a person may feel perfectly well, but the cells of his or her organs may be damaged, and this will not be discovered until the birth of deformed (畸形的) children or even grandchildren. Missions of the Apollo flights have had to cross belts of high radiation and, during the outward and return journeys, the Apollo crew accumulated (累积) a large amounts of rems. So far, no dangerous amounts of radiation have been reported, but the Apollo missions have been quite short. We simply do not know yet how men are going to get on when they spend weeks and months outside the protection of the atmosphere, working in a space laboratory. Drugs might help to decrease the damage done by radiation, but no really effective ones have been found so far.
76.     According to the first paragraph, the atmosphere is essential to man in that__________.
A.      it protects him from the harmful rays from space.
B.      it provides sufficient light for plant growth.
C.      it supplies the heat necessary for human survival.
D.     it screens off the falling meteors.
77.     We know from the passage that __________.
A.      exposure to even tiny amounts of radiation is deadly.
B.      the effect of exposure to radiation is slow in coming.
C.      radiation is avoidable in space exploration.
D.     astronauts in spacesuits needn’t worry about radiation damage.
78.     The harm that radiation has done to the Apollo crew members__________.
A. is insignificant                                       B. seems overestimated
C. is enormous                                          D. remains unknown
79.     The best title for this passage would be __________.
A. The Atmosphere and Our Environment
B. Research on Radiation
C. Effects of Space Radiation
D. Importance of Protection against Radiation

80.
I am a member of our school’s volunteer association. During my freshman(大学一年级新生) year, I was asked to write up a plan for volunteers who assisted patients there. So I visited the hospice (末期病人疗养所) several times. Later, I realized I could do more for the patients and so began volunteering.   .
81
When I was a freshman, I was not used to college life. I sometimes felt the hospice was like home. Here, many grannies treated me like their own relative, and I could feel strongly that I was needed. Just shaking hands made them come to life. I not only get great comfort from helping many patients get through the last period of their lives. I also learn a lot from their experiences.
82
You have to be prepared both mentally and physically. Most people at this hospice are facing death. So you have prepared to be patient and make them happy and relaxed. Also, persistence is needed. After seeing so many people here die, I know that persistence is hard. But you have to remember that you job is to help them feel less pain before death.
83
Good volunteers have something in common: They regard their job as a career, rather than some task that’s been assigned. They learn to enjoy what they are doing, no matter how boring it is. We have a volunteer who has been with us for more than a year. His job is translating letters from kids we helped. Even when he was busy with his classes, he would take a taxi to our office to pick up the letters. When we asked him why, he told us he enjoyed the kids’ stories and learned a lot from them.
84.
Students are often very enthusiastic and direct. They give us feedback that helps us improve our work. And they value the opportunity we give them to broaden their horizons. However, they are still young and some are not responsible enough. And sometimes, they are lazy and careless.

Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
Benjamin Franklin is a great man in the history of the USA. He was a famous statesman, scientist, inventor and philosopher in the 18th century, and he was honored as a man of ideas.
But Ben had an ordinary boyhood. He was born in 1706, in Boston, Massachusetts. His father had a candle shop there. It was a busy shop, for there were no electric lights then, and people needed candles to light their homes, stores, and other buildings.
Young Ben had only two years of schooling when his father put him to work in the family candle shop. But he did not like working in the candle shop. He liked to read. He liked to try out new ideas. He dreamed of seeing strange cities and new things.
When he was ten years old, his brother James came back from England, where he had learned as a printer. James then owned a printing shop in Boston, and Ben went to work for his brother. Very soon, Ben found that he liked the work in the printing shop. Though he was not paid for working, he was pleased to learn printing, and moreover, he had the chance to read. He even felt proud to see people read the words that he had printed.
When Ben was 16, he went to Philadelphia. He tried to get a job there. Fortunately, he found work in another printing shop. As he had learned printing before he came, he became a good printer very soon, and shortly he had a shop of his own. Sometime later Ben married and has a son and a daughter.
