People are being invited to sit down to eat with their neighbors in a nationwide lunch party designed to promote community spirit. The Big Lunch is the idea of the Eden Project in Cornwall. It aims to persuade people up and down the country to hold street lunch parties.
Tens of thousands of vegetables, fruits and flowers were used to construct a giant 2,000-square-foot lunch invitation in London’s Convent Garden. More than 9,000 cauliflowers and 800 bananas were used.
According to the organizers, people who decide to take part in the activity will get support from large companies which will supply many of the necessities, including plants to be given out to people to grow. The organizers think that the Big Lunch is a great opportunity for people to get together and spend time with their neighbors, friends and families. Events like this also help build strong communities. People can show their talents, get over their embarrassment, shake hands and get to know their neighbors, and realize that the neighborhood where they live can be a great source of happiness and enjoyment.
The Eden Project’s leader, Tim Smith, says, “It’s a good way to face this recession. Imagine a day on which millions of us, throughout the UK, sit down to have lunch together with our neighbors in the middle of our streets, around our tower blocks, and on every patch of common ground. A study published in last week’s Journal of the American Medical Association offers a picture of how risky it is to get a lift from a teenage driver. Indeed, a 16-year-old driver with three or more passengers is three times as likely to have a fatal accident as a teenager driving alone. By contrast, the risk of death for drivers between 30 and 59 decreases with each additional passenger.
The author also found that the death rates for teenage drivers increased dramatically after 10 p.m., and especially after midnight. With passengers in the car, the driver was even more likely to die in a late-night accident.
Robert Foss, a scientist at the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center, says the higher death rates for teenage drivers have less to do with “really stupid behavior” than with just a lack of driving experience. “The basic issue” he says, “is that adults who are responsible for issuing licenses fail to recognize how complex and skilled a task driving is.”
Both he and the author of the study believe that the way to mitigate (使……缓解)the problem is to have states institute so-called graduated(分等级的)licensing systems, in which getting a license is a multi-stage process. A graduated license requires that a teenager first prove himself capable of driving in the presence of an adult, followed by a period of driving with night of passenger restrictions, before graduating to full driving privileges.
Graduated licensing systems have reduced teenage driver crashes, according to recent studies. About half of the states now have some sort of graduated licensing system in place, but only 10 of those states have restrictions on passengers. California is the strictest, with a novice(新手)driver prohibited from carrying any passenger under 20 (without the presence of an adult over 25)for the first six months.
72.   Which of the following situations is most dangerous according to the passage?
A. An adult driving his colleague home after 10 p.m.
B. A teenager driving after midnight with passengers in the car.
C. An adult driving with three or more teenage passengers late at night.
D. A teenager driving alone on the highway at midnight.
73.   According to Robert Foss, the high death rate of teenage drivers is mainly due to _____.
A. their stupid talking with passengers         B. their improper way of driving
C. their lack of driving experience              D. their breaking the traffic regulations
74.   At the first stage of the graduated licensing system, a teenage driver can _____.
A. drive in the presence of an adult              B. carry passengers under 20
C. drive friends home at night                            D. have the privilege to drive at full speed
75.   What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Driving is too complicated a skill for teenagers to learn.
B. The graduated licensing systems are welcomed by teenagers and their parents.
C. California is the state with the lowest rate of traffic accident.
D. The licensing authorities are partly responsible for teenagers’ driving accidents.
Section C
Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.
A. More smokers and heavier burden on the environment
B. The invention of biodegradable filter
C. Tobacco farming destroys forests
D. Poisonous chemicals pollute the soil and waterways
E. Another reason for smokers to quit smoking
F. Cigarettes butts do harm to animals
76.
The “it’s my body and I can smoke if I like” case was extinguished by the recognition of the dangers of second-hand smoke. Now smokers are faced with another reason to quit smoking: a smoke print that has a massive worldwide environmental impact.
77.
Cigarette butts are made of cellulose acetate, which is not a biodegradable material. It can take up to three years or more for a cigarette butt to degrade. While a cigarette filter reduces the amount of tar and smoke inhaled into the lungs of a smoker, it also traps poisonous chemicals. During the years it takes for the filter to break down, poisonous chemicals leach into the ground and the waterways, creating destructive environmental pollution.
78.
The impact of cigarette butts on rivers, lakes, and coastal waters is dangerous to marine life. Animals and birds recognize the butts as food, not poison. The ingestion of butts causes unnecessary malnutrition, starvation, and poisoning. Biologists routinely find cigarette butts in the stomachs of sick or dead birds, turtles, and even dolphins.
79.
In many developing countries, the farming of tobacco is creating another crisis—deforestation. Wood is used to build curing barns and is also used as fuel to cure the tobacco leaves. An estimated 200,000 hectares of trees are cut for tobacco farming each year, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).
80.
Despite these facts, smokers continue to light up. The World Health Organization projects that the number of worldwide smokers will rise from the current 1.3 billion to 1.7 billion by 2025 (partly due to population growth) if the frequency of tobacco use does not change. That is a tremendous number of smokers giving out ETS (Environment Tobacco Smoke) into the atmosphere on a daily basis.
Section D
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.
Many parents of preschoolers struggle with their children's fears of real and imaginary creatures. A new study offers some ideas on how they can better manage their children's fears and worries. The study, which was carried out by researchers at the University of California, Davis, appears in the November/December 2009 issue of the journal Child Development.
Researchers studied about 50 4-, 5-, and 7-year-olds in an effort to identify coping strategies that can be carried out by children. The children listened to a series of short illustrated stories. Each story featured a child alone or with another person who came into contact with something that looked like a real or an imaginary frightening creature, such as a snake or a ghost. Children were asked to predict how intensely afraid each of the children in the stories were, to give a reason why each child felt that way, and to offer a way to help the child in the story feel less afraid.
In situations in which a child’s fear was caused by real creatures, the researchers found, children would rather do something than think positive thoughts. In these situations, boys more often suggested fighting, while girls more often wanted to avoid the creature.
They also found that between ages 4 and 7, children show more understanding that people's thoughts and beliefs can both cause and reduce fear. While younger children tended to suggest pretending the imaginary creature was friendly, older children tended to suggest reminding themselves what the reality was. Therefore, the researchers say, preschoolers may benefit from seeing things in a more positive light (“Let’s pretend the dragon is nice”), while older children may do better when they focus on what's real and what's not (“Dragons aren’t real”).
“These results should help parents by reminding them to keep in mind their children’s age-appropriate abilities when helping them deal with their fears, particularly fears of imaginary creatures,” according to the researchers.
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN FIFTEEN WORDS.)
81.   The new study aims at offering parents some ideas on __________.
82.   How did girls deal with fears caused by real creatures?
83.   How can you help a 7-year-old boy when he had a dream in which he was caught by a ghost?
84.   When helping children deal with fears of imaginary creatures, parents should always remember __________.

Section B  Passages
Directions: In Section B, you will hear two short passages, and you will be asked three questions on each of the passages. The passages will be read twice, but the questions will be spoken only once. When you hear a question, read the four possible answers on your paper and decide which one would be the best answer to the question you have heard.
Questions 11 through 13 are based on the following passage.
People living in urban areas in the UK are encouraged to keep bees in their gardens or on roofs. This suggestion was put forward by Natural England, an environmental organization. It wants to stop the bee populations from dropping. Natural England suggests that more people who live in urban areas should set up beehives and grow insect-friendly plants.
Nearly all the UK’s 250 kinds of bees are in decline. Experts say keeping the bee populations is very important for plants and crops because bees do them a lot of good. Honey itself is also thought to be worth between £10m and £30m to the UK economy.
The first of the newly designed urban beehives is going to be set up on the roof of Natural England’s central London office. .
Natural England suggests people think carefully about the things they need to do to keep bees. It also encourages people to seek professional advice before making a decision.
Questions:
11.   What is Natural England?  (B)
12.   Why are people encouraged to keep bees in gardens or on roofs?  (C)
13.     Where is the first newly designed urban beehive?  (D)
Questions 14 through 16 are based on the following news.
A four-year-old girl was shot in the head by her father yesterday, apparently as he quarreled with her mother over rights to see the child.
As the girl fell to the ground with fatal brain injuries, the man opened fire on her mother, from whom he had recently separated, leaving her critically injured. The child was still alive when emergency workers reached her, but died in their arms as they tried desperately to keep her breathing. The girl’s mother was last night critically ill and fighting for life after being taken by helicopter to St George’s Hospital for emergency brain surgery. Close to where the girl lay was the body of her father, a builder, who had also shot himself in the head.
Police were called to the scene by neighbours who heard the shooting around 10 a.m. yesterday. Detective Inspector Darren Rawlings said that at this stage the evidence would suggest that it was a domestic incident and police are not seeking anyone else at the moment.
Questions:
14.   How many people were killed in the incident? (B)
15.   How was the mother sent to the hospital? (B)
16.   What’s the probable cause of their quarrel? (C)
Section C  Longer Conversations
Directions: In Section C, you will hear two longer conversations. The conversations will be read twice. After you hear each conversation, you are required to fill in the numbered blanks with information you have heard. Write your answers on your answer sheet.
Blanks 17 through 20 are based on the following conversation.
M: Hello, National Express Courier Company, Customer Service Department.
W: Hello, I have some questions about a package I’m going to send, can you help me?
M: Yes, ma’am. What would you like to know?
W: I have a box of homemade candy. And I want to send it to my sister, it’s a birthday present. Do you have any special rules about delivering food?
M: No, not in this case, ma’am. If you were sending fruit or vegetables, they would have to be packed specially. But there are no rules about sending candy.
W: OK, I have another question. I’m very concerned about the package reaching my sister on time. Can you make sure that it will be there by her birthday on Saturday?
M: Where does it have to go?
W: Australia.
M: Hmm. Saturday’s only four days away. We have a priority service that would guarantee delivery in three days but it’s more expensive than our regular service.
W: Well, I don’t want to waste money, but it’s more important that the package be there on time.
M: OK. Bring your package to the office, and we’ll send it by priority service.
W: OK. I’ll do that.
Blanks 21 through 24 are based on the following conversation.
W: I really liked your powerpoint presentation.
M: Thank you.
W: I wonder if I could make a suggestion, though.
M: Please do.
W: Well, I think the content of your presentation is great. You’ve included really useful information in your presentation. You’ve obviously prepared very hard for this.
M: Thank you.
W: However, I think that perhaps you rely on the information on the slides a little bit too much.
M: What do you mean?
W: It seemed as though you were reading the slides out loud to me, word for word.
M: That’s not OK?
W: Well, if you want to give an effective presentation, you shouldn’t be reading to your audience.
M: I didn’t know that. What should I do instead?
W: You should make eye contact with the audience and communicate with them.
M: But I can’t remember all this information.
W: You don’t need to.
M: But if I don’t read it from the screen then how will I know what to say?
W: First of all, you don’t need to include all the information on the slides. Delete everything except for the main points.
M: So the slides should just include the main points.
W: Exactly.
M: Thank you. I think that will be very useful for me.
