God’s Word, the Christian Bible, has valuable instructions for husbands and wives who seek a harmonious and fulfilling marriage. The first book of the Bible, Genesis, chapter two, verse twenty-four describes three aspects to the Creator God’s original design for the relationship between a husband and wife. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.” First, you are to leave your father and mother. This does not mean you should forsake your parents. But whether you live at home with your parents or in a separate location, your new relationship establishes a new authority structure for a new home. Second, you are to be joined to each other. The Hebrew word means you must be stuck together like with glue. Nothing should come between you or tear you apart. Third, you are to become one flesh. Your previously two separate lives are now joined into one. You must develop common interests and values in one home and one life together. Learn to share your most intimate feelings and thoughts. Make sure you listen carefully to your partner as they tell you what they feel.

The Apostle Paul wrote a letter to the church at Ephesus which is also part of the Bible. Here we find instructions first for wives, then husbands. This does not mean that you should not communicate your own thoughts or opinions. This is a supernatural love that can only be fully accomplished in the power God provides. I challenge you two to be diligent in building and maintaining a home worthy of being an illustration of the relationship between Jesus Christ and His bride, the church. May others observe your relationship and see the love of God on display, then desire a home like yours.
