The European Commission said on Tuesday it aimed to conclude the long-delayed Doha Round of global trade talks by the end of 2011 at the latest.

"The commission aims to conclude the Doha Round of global trade talks as a matter of urgency, and at the latest by end 2011," the European Union (EU)'s executive arm said when presenting its new trade strategy today.

In the new strategy, the commission said it would pursue an active negotiating agenda both at multilateral level and at bilateral level.

The EU is currently negotiating free trade agreements with India and several other trading partners, in addition to the multilateral approach.

It was estimated by the commission that completing those bilateral and global trade deals would increase the EU's GDP by more than one percent per year, helping exit the current crisis and create more jobs.

Members of the World Trade Organizations (WTO) started the Doha Round of global trade talks in 2001, with a mandate to help poor countries prosper through more trade, but the negotiations have long been stalled because of sharp differences among major members over agricultural trade and industrial market access.

Deadlines previously set for conclusion of the round had been repeatedly missed.

WTO Director General Pascal Lamy last month urged world leaders to make efforts to conclude the stalled Doha Round next year.

The Doha Round talks are on the agenda of the G20 summit due to be held on Thursday in Seoul, South Korea. Leaders of major developed and emerging economies were expected to give a new impetus to the negotiations, but no breakthrough was within reach.
