On Oct. 21, the Chinese Association on Tobacco Control released a tobacco knowledge popular science handbook aimed at dispelling common myths believed by many Chinese smokers.

The total number of Chinese smokers has reached 350 million, accounting for one-third of the total number of smokers worldwide. More than 70 percent of Chinese smokers are not willing to quit smoking as a result of 75 widespread misconceptions about smoking and health, said Huang Jiefu, deputy director of the Ministry of Health.

"The Zhang Wuben phenomenon exists just because there are not enough channels for people to obtain correct health knowledge," said Huang, editor of the handbook titled "Dangers of Tobacco: Science and Fallacy" and president of the Chinese Association on Tobacco Control.

The handbook is China's first popular science handbook for the analysis of the widespread fallacies toward tobacco. It covers six aspects, which are the dangers of tobacco, tobacco addiction, smoke-free environment, tobacco "culture," tobacco and the economy as well as the tobacco trap.
